Colombia Saturday confirmed two new cases of microcephaly associated with Zika virus, bringing the total number up to four, in the midst of an epidemic that has infected nearly 72,000 people in the country and expands in America .

The National Institute of Health (INS) said that so far there have been 44 cases of microcephaly in Colombia, which links with the virus zika four were confirmed in 18 were discarded, while the remaining 22 are under investigation .

Colombia is the second country in Latin America with more cases of zika after Brazil , which has confirmed 113 cases of microcephaly thousand associated with the virus and investigates the possible relationship of other 3 000 836 in newborn babies.

Health officials United States concluded that infection with the virus zika in pregnant women is the cause of a birth defect known as microcephaly and other severe brain abnormalities in babies.

Microcephaly is a birth defect that causes the babies head is abnormally small, which can lead to difficulties in the intellectual and physical development .

The increasingly strong evidence of this possible link led to the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a global health emergency in February.

WHO experts said in late March that there is a strong scientific consensus on the link between the virus in infants with microcephaly and Guillain-Barre syndrome, although conclusive evidence could take months or years .
