Wild duck found with avian flu near Great Salt Lake

By The Associated Press   |  Updated - Sep 8th, 2015 @ 4:46pm

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah wildlife officials have discovered another wild duck with avian flu.

Leslie McFarlane of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources said Tuesday that her agency was notified about an infected mallard duck in late August. The duck had been tagged earlier in the summer at Farmington Bay on the Great Salt Lake.

McFarlane says it is the third waterfowl found with avian flu since December.

The highly pathogenic strain found in the ducks can lead to outbreaks at chicken and turkey farms. But McFarlane says poultry farms in Utah have taken precautions to prevent that from happening.

McFarlane cautions people to stay away from sick animals. She says people with backyard chickens should also be careful to shield their poultry from wild waterfowl.
