H5N8 In Poland Wild Duck Is Novel Reassortant

National Veterinary Research Institut Poland has release full H5N8 sequences (at GISAID) for all 8 gene segments from wild duck in West Pomeranian Voivodeship, A/wild duck/Poland/82A/2016.

These are the first public sequences for the H5N8 circulating in Euope.  As was seen for the H5N8 from wild birds in northern and southern Germany, the H5 and N8 sequences match the 6 sequences from 5 species infected in the Uvs Lake outbreak in Russia on the Mongolian border.  However, only 3 (PM PB1 NS) of the 6 internal genes match the Uvs Lake H5N8 sequences.  The other three internal gene segments (PB2 PA NP) match Asian low path sequences from a variety of sero-types.
