niman Posted February 16, 2020 Author Report Share Posted February 16, 2020 The federal government released a statement Saturday stating that a plane has been chartered to bring home Canadians quarantined aboard a Diamond Princess cruise ship docked in Yokohama, Japan. The Canadians have been quarantined aboard the ship for 10 days now amid an outbreak of COVID-19, which has so far infected 15 Canadians on board. The evacuated Canadians will be taken to CFB Trenton, ON for a further two weeks of quarantine. Global Affairs says the passengers will be screened before boarding the plane, and those who exhibit symptoms of COVID-19 will be transferred to the Japanese health-care system. The government says the ``extraordinary circumstances'' facing Canadians aboard the ship have driven it to evacuate. Experts have questioned if the close quarters have contributed to the spread. Another 70 people aboard the ship have tested positive for the virus, bringing the total to 355 cases, Japanese health minister Katsunobu Kato said on Sunday. The Diamond Princess, owned by Carnival Corp, has been quarantined since arriving in Yokohama, south of Tokyo, on Feb. 3, after a man who disembarked in Hong Kong before it travelled to Japan was diagnosed with the virus. Those testing positive are transferred to Japanese hospitals. The United States is also evacuating its citizens from the cruise ship, as is Hong Kong.
