The Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies (ICGES) reported that in the country there have been four cases of microcephaly, which have some relation to the Zika virus.

Juan Miguel Pascale, deputy director of ICGES, said that of all cases have been confirmed three, while one is still being investigated. He said that the latter was recorded in the Hospital San Miguel Arcangel, San Miguelito.

"In Panama they have been reported three confirmed cases of microcephaly and one of them died. Although the loss was caused by multiple malformations, is associated with the Zika virus, "he reiterated.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry said they are investigating the data, and today will be a statement about it. The possible relationship between the zika and development of neurological diseases forced the World Health Organization to issue a global emergency in February.

The Gorgas Memorial Institute confirmed two new cases of microcephaly possibly linked to Zika virus and another suspect who until yesterday had not been confirmed.

Miguel Pascals, deputy director of the Gorgas, said children are in good health and are assessed what consequences will this have on the neuro-cognitive development of creatures.

The first case of microcephaly by Zika virus was detected on 18 March and the creature died four hours after being born.

The Ministry of Health (MoH), meanwhile, reported that increased to 186 people affected and the first imported case is registered in the province of Los Santos. It is a Venezuelan girl

Authorities said the case was confirmed last Saturday and tried to locate the patient, but was no longer in place and suspect returned to his native country.

Health officials also confirmed that several pregnant women who have tested positive for Zika and are monitored.

Health officials reiterated the population contribute to the elimination of breeding places of Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits Zika virus and dengue and Chikungunya.

The government declared a national emergency by the virus increased since the first case was detected last November in the region Guna Yala. He also allocated the sum of about $ 10 million to counter the virus.

He expert He said some cases, not only have microcephaly, but produces other neurological manifestations that make them incompatible with life.

By consulting the Ministry of Health (MoH) reported that they do not handle full information and details will today.

Two dead babies related to zika and two others with the disease microcephaly is the balance that has left so far the virus, which turned deadly in the country.

Health Minister, Francisco J. Terrientes said that unfortunately the situation was coming and there is no doubt that this will have a major impact on procreation and state of life of future generations. For the moment he has to continue giving the fight to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.

Confirmed four cases of microcephaly associated with zika in Panama

Panama City, April 8 (dpa) - Four cases of microcephaly registered in Panama are linked to the Zika virus, which infected 201 people in the country, said today the director of the Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies (ICGES ), Nestor Sosa.

The viral disease was registered in this country in 2015 and from there the cases have been increasing. Zika common symptoms are fever, rash, joint pain or conjunctivitis (red eyes). Other symptoms include muscle pain and headache, although there are asymptomatic patients.

Sosa told local radio station RPC Radio that microcephaly "is a reality in the country" and issued a call for pregnant women to keep their homes clean and eliminate breeding places of Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits zika.

Also, the director of ICGES urged men who have the disease to protect themselves for six months using condoms, because scientific studies warn about the possible transmission of the virus through sex.

In March, the Ministry of Health confirmed the death of a baby with microcephaly, which became the first case of this type associated with the Zika virus in Panama.

Epidemiological authorities revealed in March that was a first case of Guillain-Barré syndrome in an adult, presumably related to Zika virus.

Four babies born with microcephaly linked to the Zika virus have been confirmed in Panama, the health ministry said on Wednesday, out of 264 total cases of the mosquito-borne infection in the country.

Public health officials have been concerned about the possibility of a surge in the rare birth defect, seen in worrisome numbers in Brazil, as the virus spreads rapidly in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Fourteen pregnant women have contracted the virus, and six babies who were infected with Zika were born with malformations, including the microcephaly cases, the health ministry said.

According to the World Health Organization, there is a strong scientific consensus that Zika can cause the birth defect microcephaly as well as Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that can result in paralysis, though conclusive proof may take months or years.

Panama's Health Minister Francisco Terrientes said the country is "staying alert to the rapid expansion of the Zika virus," and called on the population to take preventative measures.

Brazil said it has confirmed 1,198 cases of Zika-related microcephaly, a rare birth defect marked by small head size that can lead to severe developmental problems in babies. Zika has also been linked to other severe birth defects and with stillbirth.
