Probable cases are those who test positive by other testing methods such as antibody or antigen, and have recent symptoms consistent with COVID-19, indicating a recent infection. Probable deaths are those individuals with a designation of COVID-19 as a cause of death on the death certificate, but where no confirmatory testing was performed. K-12 School Report by County Each week all Mississippi K-12 schools report cases among students, teachers and staff, number of outbreaks, and teachers and students under quarantine as a result of COVID-19 exposure. These reports are then summarized by county. Note: An outbreak in a school setting is defined as 3 or more individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 in the same group within a 14-day period. K-12 school cases, outbreaks and exposure totals by county PDF Updated weekly Long-Term Care Facility Cases and Outbreaks Long-term care (LTC) facilities like nursing homes are considered high risk locations because their residents are older or in poor health. A single confirmed COVID-19 infection in an LTC facility resident, or more than one infection in employees or staff in a 14-day period constitutes an outbreak. Residential care facilities also represent group living facilities where COVID-19 can be easily spread. We investigate residents, staff and close contacts of infected individuals for possible exposure. These outbreak figures are reported directly to MSDH by the facility. Many of the cases and deaths reported by faciltities may not yet be included in our totals of lab-reported cases. Ongoing Outbreaks This weekly table of ongoing outbreaks lists all facilities that have reported a current, active outbreak of COVID-19. The reported totals are for cases and deaths associated with the current outbreak only. Note: The cases and deaths in this document have been reported to us directly by the facilities, and may not have appeared yet in our county totals, which are based on reports from testing laboratories. By Los Angeles Times Staff Updated Aug. 29, 9:50 p.m. Pacific 701,888 confirmed cases +3,660 on Saturday 12,910 deaths +72 on Saturday The coronavirus pandemic has spread rapidly across California. Experts say the true number of people infected is unknown and likely much higher than official tallies. To better understand the spread of the virus, The Times is conducting an independent, continual survey of dozens of local health agencies across the state. What we know The state has changed its reopening plan. The governor’s new system will keep most of the state on lockdown for now. Masks remain required. Officials are pointing to positive signs. With recent technical bugs sorted out, state and local officials see signs of hope in the recent drops in new cases and hospitalizations. The death toll keeps climbing. The state has averaged 110.4 deaths per day over the last seven days. Fewer tests are coming back positive. The statewide positivity rate has held steady at 5.5%. Disparities are wide. After adjusting for population, Latinos are now 3.4 times more likely to test positive than white people. The highest toll is among seniors. Roughly 74% of the dead were 65 or older. At least 5,033 were living at a nursing home. Coronavirus can infect people so rapidly that it has continued to spread despite shutdown orders aimed at slowing the growth of new cases and flattening this line. For instance, some agencies do not report new totals on weekends, leading to lower numbers on those days. State and local officials say they have overcome the technical problems that delayed the tabulation of test results in early August. Tallies dipped, and then surged, due to the bottleneck. Officials say the latest figures are now a more accurate reflection of current trends. The Times aims to rectify past counts as local officials issue corrections. Over the past week, the state has averaged 5,283 new cases and 110.4 new deaths per day. The chart below is adjusted to show how quickly new cases are being confirmed in each county. A good sign is when a line flattens, which indicates that transmission is slowing in that area. Doubling rate is the estimate of how long it would take the county to double its number of cases, given the trend in the last week. Compare the slope of a county's curve to the slope of the guide lines to estimate its doubling rate at any point. How COVID-19 crushed California’s workforce The coronavirus outbreak decimated California's economy. The Times is tracking the fallout as businesses begin to reopen. Cases by county and city While initial outbreaks were centered in the San Francisco Bay Area, most new cases and deaths are now concentrated in Southern California. State officials say the transition is complete and that hospital data are now stable. There are now 4,072 hospital patients statewide with a confirmed case, a change of -20% from two weeks ago. Lives lost to COVID-19 Learn more about those we've lost by reading Times obituaries of Californians who have died from coronavirus. New guidelines for reopening Gov. Gavin Newsom unveiled a new plan on Friday to revive the California economy decimated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Counties will be allowed to ease restrictions in four tiers, which will determine when and how businesses reopen. California’s reopening risk tiers Tier 1 Widespread Most nonessential indoor business operations are closed. Tier 2 Substantial Some nonessential indoor business operations are closed. Tier 3 Moderate Some business operations can open with modifications. Tier 4 Minimal Most business operations can open with modifications The new groups, known as tiers, are based on a set of metrics developed by state officials. Which tier a county falls in decides what can be reopened. Tier 1 Tier 2 Tier 3 Tier 4 Hover for more information. Find out what's open where you live. Our state in context To date, the United States has recorded 5,912,216 coronavirus cases and 181,804 deaths. In the last week, the country has averaged 41,528 new cases and 917 deaths per day. The chart below is adjusted to show how quickly new cases are being confirmed in each state. A good sign is when a line flattens, which indicates that transmission is slowing in that area. Case counts are plotted on a logarithmic scale, which makes it easier to see when cases level off. Doubling rate is the estimate of how long it would take the state to double its number of cases, given the trend in the last week. Compare the slope of a state's curve to the slope of the guide lines to estimate its doubling rate at any point. California, America’s most populous state, leads the nation in cases. It ranks much lower after adjusting for population. The states with the fastest-growing outbreaks over the past two weeks, based on population, are North Dakota, Iowa and Mississippi. State and county totals come from a continual Times survey of California's 58 county health agencies as well as the three run by cities. Those figures are ahead of the totals periodically released by the state's Department of Public Health. State officials acknowledge that their tallies lag behind the updates posted by local agencies throughout the day and do not dispute The Times' method. Data from other states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico are collected by researchers at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Systems Science and Engineering. Data on hospitalizations, tests, demographics and nursing homes come from California's Department of Public Health. Closures and restrictions are drawn from an ongoing Times survey of county governments. The Times database is available to the public on Github, a popular website for hosting data and computer code. The files will be updated daily at github.com/datadesk/california-coronavirus-data.
