FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 17, 2020 COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) is investigating 14 additional cases of the COVID-19 novel coronavirus. This brings the total number statewide to 47 cases in 13 counties. “We emphasize the importance of practicing disease prevention measures and following recommendations for social distancing to protect our community as a whole,” said Dr. Brannon Traxler, DHEC physician consultant. County location of new cases 1 new case from Beaufort County 2 new cases from Charleston County 1 new case from Calhoun County 5 new cases from Kershaw County 1 new case from Lexington County 1 new case from Richland County 1 new case from York County 1 new case from Greenville County 1 new case from Horry County As the state’s number of positive cases expectedly increases, DHEC will continue to provide the number of positive cases and the county of residence. One case previously reported in Kershaw County has been corrected to a Fairfield County case. DHEC’s new COVID-19 county map provides the number of cases by county and is updated daily. “We know that many South Carolinians are concerned about what impact this virus may have on themselves, their loved ones, and our state,” Traxler said. “This is a rapidly evolving public health event, and DHEC takes every new infectious disease seriously.” DHEC encourages the public to follow recommendations for social distancing to protect the health and safety of all South Carolinians. This includes: washing your hands frequently, covering your cough, staying home when you’re sick and not attend public gatherings, and appropriately disposing tissues and other items that you've sneezed or coughed into. Several South Carolina health systems are offering telehealth options to the public. For telehealth options and the latest information about DHEC’s COVID-19 response efforts, please visit scdhec.gov/COVID19. For more information about COVID-19, visit the CDC website here. -

Coronavirus Latest: PA Task Force One Found Setting Up Tents At Citizens Bank Park For Possible Mass Testing Site, Sources Say By Stephanie StahlMarch 17, 2020 at 6:30 pm Filed Under:coronavirus, Local, Local TV, Pennsylvania News PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — With the spread of the coronavirus, there are growing concerns about hospital capacity and equipment shortages. People on the front lines are worried as hospitals around the Philadelphia region are seeing a surge of patients and a shortage of protective gear. Ads by Teads Officials say to get more people screened, the state will now set up more testing spots that are expected to open next week. (credit: CBS3) Similar to what was set up in New Rochelle, New York, Pennsylvania officials are expected to open two mass testing sites for COVID-19 — one in Montgomery County and the other in Philadelphia. Chopper 3 found tents being set up by PA Task Force One at the Citizens Bank Park parking lot. Sources confirm that the task force is setting up for a possible coronavirus mass testing location in South Philadelphia. See Stephanie Stahl's other Tweets Coronavirus Update: Latest On COVID-19 Cases, School Closings And Cancellations Across Delaware Valley It’s desperately needed by hospitals that are being bombarded with patients. Many have resorted to drive-thru testing in an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19 inside already crowded hospitals. “I need to save my personnel and my supplies and my tests for patients that end up in my emergency rooms and in my urgent care and in my inpatient beds,” said Jack Lynch, president of Main Line Health. Lynch says they have 40 patients hospitalized at Lankenau, Bryn Mawr and Paoli with positive and presumed cases of COVID-19. They’re being cared for in specialized rooms to protect staff and other patients, but there are limited supplies of protective equipment, especially masks. “So, we’re tying not to use the highest level on every single potential risk, to ensure that we have those masks available for the more serious, higher risk procedures and patients,” Lynch said. LATEST CORONAVIRUS STORIES Medical supplies are a big concern everywhere as more hospital workers are now testing positive. Whether they’re exposed inside the hospital or the community, it could result in staffing shortages. “As more get sick and have exposure, we get sidelined and then who’s there to take care of the patients?” said Bonnie Castillo, executive director of National Nurses United. Health officials are pleading with people to stay home to help contain the spread. Testing is still limited and only for people with symptoms of a fever, cough and intense fatigue and they have to have a doctor referral. Division of Surveillance and Investigation Coronavirus FAQs Epidemiology Home Email this page CORONAVIRUS DISEASE 2019 (COVID-19) Situation Summary The Virginia Department of Health is responding to the outbreak of respiratory illness, called coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), that is caused by a novel (new) coronavirus. The outbreak was first detected in China in December 2019. On March 7, 2020 the first case of COVID-19 in Virginia was announced. COVID-19 has now been detected in more than 100 locations internationally. On March 11, the World Health Organization characterized COVID-19 as a pandemic. On March 12, Governor Northam declared a state of emergency in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Most people with COVID-19 develop fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Healthcare professionals evaluating ill patients for suspected COVID-19 can request testing through a private laboratory. VDH approval is not required for this testing. Because of a limited number of tests available, testing performed at DCLS, Virginia’s state laboratory, is reserved for patients who meet VDH’s priority investigation criteria. Our knowledge of COVID-19 is still rapidly evolving. Labs assign those cases to a county. Counties or the Department of Health then determine the appropriate county of jurisdiction. Those don’t always match initially. We’re working to reduce the “unassigned” number to 0. Contact the local health department for county specific information. Note on the deaths: Some deaths may be reported by health care providers, medical examiners/coroners, local health departments, or others before they are included in the statewide count. It takes longer for the state to announce deaths because they are often reported first to the local health department and then to us. Note on the number of infections: Public health experts agree that the true number of people who have been infected with COVID-19 in Washington greatly exceeds the number of COVID-19 infections that have been laboratory-confirmed. It is very difficult to know exactly how many people in Washington have been infected to date since most people with COVID-19 experience mild illness and the ability to get tested is still not widely available. https://www.doh.wa.gov/Emergencies/Coronavirus -

Public Health Officials Announce First Illinois Coronavirus Disease Death 17th Mar, 2020 Officials closely monitoring outbreak at long-term care facility in DuPage County CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) today announced the first death of an Illinois resident who tested positive for coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The individual was a Chicago resident in her 60s who tested positive earlier this month and had contact with a known COVID-19 case. "I am deeply saddened by the news that we've dreaded since the earliest days of this outbreak: the first COVID-19 related death in Illinois," said Governor JB Pritzker. "All of Illinois stands with this patient's family and loved ones in mourning her loss and honoring her memory. May her memory be a blessing. There are going to be moments during the next few weeks and months when this burden feels like it is more than we can bear – this is one of those moments, but we will get through this together.” IDPH announced this past weekend the first resident in a long-term care in Illinois to test positive for COVID-19. Following aggressive testing at the facility, IDPH has now confirmed an additional 21 cases at the facility, 17 residents and four staff. “In addition to the death we are sad to report today, we are also reporting an outbreak of COVID-19 in a long-term care facility,” said IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike. “Residents in nursing homes are our most vulnerable population and we are doing everything we can to protect them. We may see cases in other long-term care facilities, which is why it is so important that we all do our part to reduce possible exposure in the community to those who go in and out of these facilities as they provide care to resident.” Updated guidance for nursing homes: Restrict all visitation except for certain compassionate care situations, such as end of life residents Restrict all volunteers and non-essential health care personnel (e.g., barbers) Cancel all group activities and communal dining Implement active screening of residents and health care personnel for fever and respiratory symptoms Additional guidance for long-term care facilities is on the IDPH website. Currently, IDPH is reporting 160 cases in 15 counties in Illinois. Cases have occurred in ages 9 to 91. Cases by county can be found on the IDPH website, as well as a list of local health departments.
