This happens whether they have symptoms or not. Communities can track virus activity by looking for viral RNA in wastewater. Wastewater, or sewage, includes water that may contain human waste (toilets, showers, sinks). It also includes water from some other sources (rainwater, water for industrial use). To better understand the burden of COVID-19 in a community, Maine CDC and US CDC test wastewater for the virus. This helps to tailor public health actions to protect communities across the state. The highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza was confirmed by testing at a commercial poultry farm in Madison County, according to a state Department of Agriculture news release Friday afternoon. Animal care specialists discovered a sudden death of four geese in the Farmstead’s flock, and one wild duck earlier this week. Initial testing results returned a presumed positive for the H5 virus, the avian flu. The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a commercial broiler breeder chicken flock in Madison County, Arkansas.
