In February, officials at Iowa poultry associations said producers were closely watching for signs of disease. Not only do producers with infected flocks face the loss of their birds, but they must conduct extensive disinfection before introducing new birds in their facilities
Henry Niman, a biochemist in Pittsburgh who has been tracking the outbreak’s spread, told the New York Times last month that the current strain of the disease is particularly virulent.
