Experts say the true number of people infected is unknown and likely much higher than official tallies. To better understand the spread of the virus, The Times is conducting an independent, continual survey of dozens of local health agencies across the state. What we know Cases are increasing. Records have been shattered in recent days with 24 counties failing to meet the governor's standard for containing new cases. Hospitalizations are creeping up. Patient counts are climbing in 10 counties, threatening a goal of the stay-at-home policies. Testing has increased. Over the last seven days, about 106,000 tests have been conducted per day, exceeding the governor’s goal. The reopening is rolling back. With cases increasing, some areas have have returned to stricter lockdowns and masks are required across the state.. The highest toll is among seniors. Roughly 77% of the dead were 65 or older. At least 3,213 were living at a nursing home. California's totals still sit far below New York, where more than 32,200 people have died. Over the past week, the state has averaged 7,660 new cases and 79.3 new deaths per day. The chart below is adjusted to show how quickly new cases are being confirmed in each county. How COVID-19 crushed California’s workforce The coronavirus outbreak decimated California's economy. The Times is tracking the fallout as businesses begin to reopen. Find out what's open where you live. Our state in context The coronavirus has hit most of the U.S., with the largest concentrations in and around New York City. California, America's most populous state, has one of the highest totals. It ranks much lower after adjusting for population. The chart below is adjusted to show how quickly new cases are being confirmed in each state. A good sign is when a line flattens, which indicates that transmission is slowing in that area. Case counts are plotted on a logarithmic scale, which makes it easier to see when cases level off. Doubling rate is the estimate of how long it would take the state to double its number of cases, given the trend in the last week. Compare the slope of a state's curve to the slope of the guide lines to estimate its doubling rate at any point.
