Health officials have confirmed a second Zika infection in Allegheny County, this one involving a man who returned from a Zika-affected area in March.

That man, who wasn’t identified, is doing well, said Melissa Wade, spokeswoman for the Allegheny County Health Department. Testing for 75 other Allegheny County residents is pending, the health department web site states.

Today, the State Department of Heatlh the county raised the statewide total number of cases to date to 16, as a result of the Allegheny County case, with 128 pending test results.

County Health Director Karen Hacker has encouraged pregnant women to avoid visiting outbreak-stricken regions of the world, including Caribbean nations, Central America and large a percentage of South American nations, among other places worldwide.

Zika infections appear tied to elevated incidences of birth defects in countries such as Brazil, where the outbreak picked up speed in May 2015.

In its most recent totals, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 388 cases of Zika with 33 involving pregnant women and eight cases resulting from sexual contact with travelers returning from Zike-affected areas. There has yet to be a document case on mainland United States linked directly to a bite from an Aedes mosquito, which are the known vectors of the virus.
