Experts say the true number of people infected is unknown and likely much higher than official tallies. To better understand the spread of the virus, The Times is conducting an independent, continual survey of dozens of local health agencies across the state. What we know Stay-at-home orders have returned. Most of the state, including Los Angeles County, is currently under stricter rules. New cases have been surging. Over the last seven days, the state has averaged 37,745 cases per day, a 121.9% increase from two weeks ago. Roughly 12.8% of tests this past week have come back positive. Deaths are on the rise. The state has averaged 219.9 daily deaths over the last week, an increase of 170.5% from two weeks ago. Hospitalizations have never been higher. Statewide, there are 15,431 people hospitalized with a confirmed case, 75% more than two weeks ago. Among those patients, 3,280 are in intensive care. Disparities in age and race persist. Roughly 74% of the dead were 65 or older. After adjusting for population, Latinos are now 2.7 times more likely than whites to test positive. For instance, some agencies do not report new totals on holidays and weekends, leading to lower numbers on those days. Over the past week, the state has averaged 37,745 new cases and 219.9 new deaths per day. On the cases chart, gray bars mark when errors in a state computer system delayed the tabulation of new cases. Where new cases are concentrated State officials study the latest data and then rate regions and counties to determine when and how businesses reopen. The government doesn‘t release enough data to replicate its analysis, but the rate of new cases per 100,000 residents over the last seven days provides insight into where the virus is spreading.
