The British variant of Covid-19 has been located in tests carried out on several people in the Italian regions of Veneto, Campania, Marche and Apulia in recent days, as announced by the authorities.

At the moment, three cases have been found in Veneto (northeast Italy), as announced by the governor of the region, Luca Zaia, during a press conference organized at the headquarters of the Marghera Civil Protection.

The first results of a study were reported by Antonia Ricci, general director of the Venice Zooprophylactic Institute, who explained that in recent days more samples from five patients who had had contact with Great Britain have been analyzed and in two cases the so-called English variant in the province of Vicenza and Treviso.

Furthermore, the Telethon Institute for Genetics and Medicine in Pozzuoli, in the southern region of Campania, also detected six cases of the English variant in tests recently carried out at Capodichino airport in people from London.

In the rest of the samples analyzed, a total of 8 different variants were identified, all belonging to "type B", very widespread in Europe.

“The identification of the six positive cases follows the Region's ordinance blocking flights from the UK immediately after the news of the discovery of the new variant. A careful control and filtering of arrivals and the evolution of the epidemic will continue in the coming days, to guarantee the maximum security conditions, ”declared the president of the region, Vincenzo De Luca.

Also on December 21 and 22, the tests of two patients from Apulia, from the United Kingdom and who tested positive for Covid, were received at the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Apulia and Basilicata.

'The analysis of the sequences obtained in both samples revealed the presence of a viral genotype corresponding to the so-called English variant of SARS Cov2. The sequences of the complete genome of the two viruses will be deposited in the public database and made available to the international scientific community ”, explained the Apulian health authorities.

Also in Lazio, whose capital is Rome, the case of a person with the English variant of the virus was detected, who had been in the past days in Great Britain.

Italy has allowed the return of Italians residing in the country only after carrying out a PCR test before their entry and the application of quarantine.
