3 more UK Covid-19 variant cases in NY as state positive rate drops slightly

New York has three additional cases of a variant of the coronavirus that spreads much more aggressively, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said today.

Two of the three new cases are related to the state’s first confirmed case of the strain sweeping the United Kingdom at a jewelry store in Saratoga County, he said.

But the third was discovered on Long Island, he added.

“That brings the number of UK cases in this country to just about 55,” Cuomo said during a conference call today. “We believe it is more widespread than that number would suggest.”

The discovery comes as the state received the highest number of test results in a single day, the governor said.

On Friday, the state got results for 258,031 tests. Of those, 16,943, or 6.57%, came back positive.

That’s a smaller percentage of positive tests compared with the previous day, when 7.7% of the tests came back positive.
