niman
Recent reports confirmed a Zika cluster in Wynwood and the CDC issued a travel warning for the 1 square mile area north of downtown Miami. The number of confirmed local Zika cases in that area has grown, which is not a surprise because 14 of 30 employees at the index location were symptomatic suggesting virtually all 30 employees had been Zika infected since 80% of Zika infections are asymptomatic. Similarly 6 of 52 nearby asymptomatic residents were PCR confirmed through urine testing. However, a media reported citing a government report noted that employees at the index commercial site began showing symptoms in early June, indicating local residents infected in June would have tested negative in the urine test, which reliably identifies infections that began in the two weeks prior to sample collection. Thus, the attack rate in this region was very high, which was support by symptoms in multiple employees at a third commercial site nearby, which also generated at least 3 Zika confirmed cases. However, in addition to the cases in the Wynwood area, Florida described 10 additional local cases outside of the Wynwood area. The first two cases (one in Miami-Dade and one in Broward Counties were investigated and samples from contacts and neighbors were negative, so the site of infection remained unknown and the cases were closed and the cases were not considered to be linked to active transmission, even though the cases were local and presumably infected by mosquitoes in Florida. Thus, there were then 8 active investigations outside of Wynwood, one in Palm Beach and seven in Miami Beach counties. These active investigations were described on the Miami active investigations page, but the "investigations" were extremely limited http://www.floridahealth.gov/diseases-and-conditions/zika-virus/index.html?utm_source=flhealthIndex The earliest case involved collection of 21 samples with negative results for the first 19 tested. However, for the remaining seven "investigations" testing was even more limited. Only three samples were collected in Palm Beach (and all three were negative). For the five most recent Miami-Dade "investigations" only one sample has been listed as tested. For the four most recent "investigations" only two samples have been collected (and not tested). However, yesterday's Florida's press release cited nine positives for the seven active Miami-Dade investigations outside of Wynwood, indicating two clusters of two or one cluster of three have already been con firmed. http://www.floridahealth.gov/newsroom/2016/08/081816-zika-update.html Media reports strongly suggested that the Florida Department of Health results confirmed a cluster involving multiple confirmations in Miami Beach. niman
Health officials now believe the Zika virus is being transmitted by mosquitoes in parts of Miami Beach, a development that is expected to lead to a travel warning for one of the country’s best known travel destinations. Roughly a handful of cases have cropped up that are believed to be linked to that part of the city, a health official who spoke on condition of anonymity told STAT. https://www.statnews.com/2016/08/18/zika-virus-miami-beach/?s_campaign=tw&utm_content=buffere48e6&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer
