What we know Case counts have started to sink. Over the last seven days, the state has averaged 10,472 cases per day, a 51.3% decrease from two weeks ago. Roughly 4.3% of tests this past week have come back positive. Death tolls are falling too. The state has averaged 399 daily deaths over the last week, a 27.5% decrease from two weeks ago. The hospitalization surge has crested. Statewide, there are 9,883 people hospitalized with a confirmed case, a 37.1% decrease from two weeks ago. Vaccines are slowly arriving. 10.7% of the population has received at least one dose. Learn more about the rollout with The Times’ new vaccine tracker. Disparities in age and race persist. Roughly 74% of the dead were 65 or older. After adjusting for population, Latinos are now 2.6 times more likely than whites to test positive. So far, 1 out of every 11 people in the state has tested positive. The number statewide is now on pace to double every 220.6 days, a number used to measure how quickly the virus is spreading. For instance, some agencies do not report new totals on holidays and weekends, leading to lower numbers on those days. Over the past week, the state has averaged 10,472 new cases and 399 new deaths per day. Experts say the true number of people infected is unknown and likely much higher than official tallies. On the cases chart, gray bars mark when errors in a state computer system delayed the tabulation of new cases. Track hospitals in California Follow the data and look up the latest patient numbers and beds at hundreds of hospitals across the state. Where new cases are concentrated State officials study the latest data and then rate regions and counties to determine when and how businesses reopen. The government doesn’t release enough data to replicate its analysis, but the rate of new cases per 100,000 residents over the last seven days provides insight into where the virus is spreading.
