The dead peacocks and sick chickens that were found in the green area Lilla Holmen in Mariehamn carried a highly pathogenic bird flu. What type of virus there is the question of being investigated by the Food Safety Authority Evira.

Last week found four dead peacocks and several sick chickens at Lilla Holmen. Several birds have since fallen ill and some have also died. The rest of the chickens at Lilla Holmen killed to prevent the spread of infection.

Since bird flu is highly pathogenic Evira has established a restricted zone extending ten kilometers beyond Lilla Holmen. Within the zone made additional checks on poultry farms and the movement of poultry and their products is limited.

Evira is now investigating whether the birds at Lilla Holmen bar on the same type of virus, H5N8, which has been found in dead wild ducks that were found in Åland a week ago.

Suspected bird flu should be reported

If you suspect infection or encounters mass death of birds should immediately contact the municipal or länsveterinär. Evira recommends that you avoid touching dead birds without gloves and leaving sampling to the vet.

H5N8 has not been found in humans and under the THL is the risk of infection is minimal. Overall meager infect avian flu to humans. Bird flu is contagious only in close contact with sick birds, not through food, eggs and meat as long as food is cooked properly.

Agriculture and Forestry Ministry has stated that all poultry to be kept indoors at least until May.
