COPENHAGEN, Denmark — Officials in Norway say at least 50 people in Oslo have been infected with the omicron variant.

The cases are connected to a company’s recent Christmas party in a restaurant in the capital, officials said Thursday.

The Oslo Municipality said in a statement that more cases are expected. Officials are trying to trace transmission routes from the party.

Much remains unknown about the new variant, including whether it is more contagious, as some health authorities suspect, whether it makes people more seriously ill, and whether it can thwart vaccines.

The Norwegian Institute of Public Health said that those affected live in Oslo and surrounding municipalities.

Today, the NIPH confirmed by whole genome sequencing that a participant at an event in Oslo was infected with the omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Currently, more than 50 people are confirmed to be infected. Work is now underway to map how many are infected with the omicron variant.

The outbreak in Oslo, with participants from several other municipalities, is large, with many infected people and their close contacts being followed up.

All the participants at the event were recommended to be tested in advance, and there was a high vaccination coverage in the group.

The number of reported cases belonging to this outbreak is currently more than 50 cases (02.12.21).

In addition to coming from Oslo, the participants also came from several surrounding municipalities. The contact tracing team in Oslo has contacted the municipalities concerned to begin contact tracing.

The NIPH will be available to answer questions about the outbreak during and after the Government's press conference at 4 p.m. CET.
