A virus affecting wild birds and poultry has been detected at the Emiquon Preserve of The Nature Conservancy in Lewistown.

Avian flu, which also is contracted in rare cases by humans, was discovered in one of several dead snow geese found at the preserve.

To protect the public, the area along the Illinois River in Fulton County has temporarily closed.

Isabel Morales, media relations manager for The Nature Conservancy, said the closure prevents visitors from coming in contact with the infectious disease.

“It’s pretty fluid right now. There were several birds that we found on site that were dead, but so far one has been identified as potentially having it, so we’re still waiting for more results," Morales said. ”So far, the CDC says there isn't a huge risk for it to infect people, but we’re doing it as an abundance of caution and to reduce any kind of risk of it spreading.”
