H5N1 HPAI Mixed Species Farm Windsor Nova Scotia

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

On February 11, 2022, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza subtype H5N1 on a mixed farm operation (avian detection) in western New Scotland, which produces poultry and other products for local sale.

This follows multiple confirmed detections of the same strain of avian influenza in Newfoundland and Labrador and more recently in wild birds, a backyard flock and a commercial flock in Nova Scotia. .

In order to contain the possible spread of the disease, the CFIA has imposed movement restrictions and recommends that other farms in the area tighten biosecurity measures.

At the time of writing, some countries have implemented temporary import restriction measures, which have varying impacts on poultry products and regions in Canada, primarily limited to the export of certain poultry products. from Nova Scotia. This is normal preventative practice when such detections occur.

We are continuing talks with our overseas trading partners to allow trade to resume.

Affected producers and industry associations as well as federal and provincial departments are cooperating with the ongoing investigation. The common goal is to protect human health, to protect the health of Canadian herds and, in doing so, to maintain market access.
