niman Posted March 30, 2022 Author Report Posted March 30, 2022 We report a wild bird infected with a Highly pathogenic avian influenza virus strain of H5 subtype in Ontario, as well as additional cases in Newfoundland. The virus isolated from Ontario contains a unique constellation of gene segments with PB2, PB1 and NP belonging to wild bird origin North American lineage influenza A viruses. The remaining gene segments (PA, HA, NA, M and NS) belong to Eurasian Gs/GD lineage HPAI H5N1 viruses belonging to 2.3.4.4B clade circulating in the Atlantic provinces of Canada, USA and Europe. The HA cleavage site motif is “PLREKRRKR/GLF” compatible with HPAI viruses. Wildlife surveillance as well as the Canadian Avian Influenza Surveillance System (CanNAISS) activities for poultry are ongoing in Canada. According to article 10.4.1.4 of the Terrestrial Animal Health Code, Member Country should not impose bans on the international trade of poultry commodities in response to notification of infection with any Influenza A viruses in birds other than poultry. https://wahis.oie.int/#/report-info?reportId=51062
