niman
While we haven't received official confirmation from the USDA, we have reason to believe that avian influenza was the cause of death of five black swans. As a precautionary measure for the health and safety of our entire bird collection, all at risk species were moved indoors, and all aviaries are closed to the public. Our Animal Care and Animal Health teams will continue to monitor, quarantine and test the birds regularly. Avian influenza - commonly called "bird flu" - is a viral infection that occurs naturally in birds. Wild birds can carry the virus, but usually do not get sick from it, some domesticated birds, such as chickens, ducks, and turkeys, can become infected, often fatally. Avian influenza does not pose a threat to humans. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed. https://www.columbuszoo.org/
