Point Pleasant Beach Mayor Paul Kanitra said via social media on Monday that cases were found at Lake of the Lilies, a freshwater lake located just a block from the Atlantic Ocean in the southern portion of the borough.

“We have confirmed cases of bird flu at Lake of the Lilies,” Kanitra said. “While the risk of human transmission is low, please stay away from the area for the time being until it has run its course amongst the swans and geese there.”

About 30 swans, a goose and a duck have died of bird flu at a lake in Point Pleasant Beach, the town’s mayor said Tuesday.

“It is moving quickly through the population and our hope is that it will fully run its course soon,” Mayor Paul Kanitra said Tuesday of the wildlife at Lake of the Lilies. “Apparently a lot of them are asymptomatic which is a good thing.”

Police asked residents to avoid interacting with any sick, injured or deceased water fowl “while incidents are being investigated.”
