niman Posted February 7, 2020 Author Report Posted February 7, 2020 New coronavirus infection confirmed on a cruise ship calling at Yokohama Port The cruise ship Diamond Princess, which arrived at Yokohama Port on February 3, is undergoing quarantine at sea, but 41 out of 171 new test results for the new coronavirus have been identified. As coronavirus positive was confirmed, we will send it to a medical institution with an infectious disease ward today with the cooperation of Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba, Kanagawa and Shizuoka prefectures. A total of 61 out of 273 people tested positive. Those who are transported include elderly people and foreign nationals, and it is necessary to take measures that take into account physical conditions. The press is requested to give special consideration to coverage of this matter.https://www.mhlw.go.jp/stf/newpage_09340.html
niman Posted February 7, 2020 Author Report Posted February 7, 2020 Another 41 people quarantined aboard a cruise liner off the coast of Japan have tested positive for the coronavirus, bringing the total number of infected passengers to 61. The dramatic jump in fresh cases follows 10 positive diagnoses among Diamond Princess passengers on Wednesday, and a further 10 on Thursday. The new cases were among 171 remaining test results. The results of all 273 tests have now been confirmed. About 3,700 passengers and crew are aboard the ship, but tests were conducted only on people who displayed symptoms or had been in close contact with a Hong Kong man who tested positive after leaving the ship at the end of last month. Twenty-one of the 41 patients are Japanese, the health minister, Katsunobu Kato, told reporters on Friday. The nationalities of the remaining passengers were not immediately available. The age range of the newly diagnosed patients suggests that older passengers are particularly vulnerable. The new cases include three people in their 20s to 40s, three in their 50s, eight in their 60s, 21 in their 70s and six in their 80s, Kato said. The health ministry said the patients would be transferred to hospitals in Tokyo and several other prefectures, according to public broadcaster NHK.https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2020/feb/07/coronavirus-live-updates-in-china-wuhan-coronavirus-outbreak-cruise-ship-doctor-japan
psk Posted February 7, 2020 Report Posted February 7, 2020 Shouldn't all countries with nationals on board this ship be starting to make arrangements to remove their own passengers now? It doesn't take a lot to figure out that the chances are extremely high of most, if not all, of the people on the cruise having this virus due to the numbers coming out already and from being in relatively close proximity to each other for weeks. The health board in Japan would struggle with that and is under strain already. This ships a ticking time bomb from where I'm sitting.
Stephen Flynn Posted February 7, 2020 Report Posted February 7, 2020 (edited) The Diamond Princes may offer a preview of cases that occur within enclosed spaces. This brings to mind the super-spreading event which happened at the Metropole Hotel in Hong Kong during the 2003 SARS epidemic. From Wikipedia, relating to the 2003 SARS epidemic “The disease spread in Hong Kong from Liu Jianlun, a Guangdong doctor who was treating patients at Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital.[34] He arrived in February and stayed on the ninth floor of the Metropole Hotel in Kowloon, infecting 16 of the hotel visitors. Those visitors traveled to Canada, Singapore, Taiwan, and Vietnam, spreading SARS to those locations.” I found the image of where the primary case was located on the 9th floor related to those who become infected in nearby room and those who did not interesting. I suspect a cruise ship layout may be similar.
