A British couple who came to symbolise the plight of more than 3,000 people quarantined on a cruise liner off Japan are in “a really bad way” after contracting pneumonia.

David and Sally Abel, who won worldwide fame with their video updates on Facebook, were diagnosed with the coronavirus after 16 days mostly confined to their cabin on the Diamond Princess.

They are now in isolation in a “prison-like” hospital in Japan. David’s condition is “very serious”, said his son, Stephen.

Expressing frustration over the “next to useless” efforts of the Foreign Office, Stephen appealed to Donald Trump to help the couple, who were on the cruise for their 50th wedding anniversary.

He tweeted to the US president: “Need help getting my mum and dad
