See http://www.cdc.gov/zika/geo/index.html for updated countries and http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/notices/ for travel notices In California, six travel-associated Zika cases were reported between 2013 and 2015.On 2/9/16, ACPHD confirmed an Alameda County resident has preliminarily tested positive for the Zika virus. The person was infected with Zika virus while traveling in a Zika-affected country. Updated case counts will be available weekly on Fridays. As of February 5, 2016, there have been six confirmed cases of Zika virus disease reported in California residents, all in travelers returning from other countries with Zika virus outbreaks. These cases occurred in 2013 (1), 2014 (3), and 2015 (2). CDPH has also been notified of one preliminary positive case of Zika for 2016. CDPH requested that health care providers voluntarily report Zika virus infections. The CDPH laboratory can provide preliminary laboratory testing and coordinate confirmatory testing, which is currently provided by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). READ MORE The six confirmed cases of Zika virus in California were acquired in other countries. The Zika virus is primarily transmitted to people by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, the same mosquitoes that can transmit dengue and chikungunya viruses. These mosquitoes are not native to California, but have been identified in 12 California counties. In San Bernardino County they were found in October of 2015, but the risk of transmission in California is still low.
