After an outbreak in China, the coronavirus pandemic has killed thousands and reached nearly every corner of the world, including California.

Experts say the true number of cases is probably far above the official tally of positive tests. But here's what we know so far about the statewide spread of the virus that causes COVID-19.

What is the trend over time?

The state's first case was confirmed near the end of January. The total grew slowly at first, then much faster as tests became more widely available.

New patients have continued to be confirmed every day, despite a shortage in tests.

"There are thousands of people in our communities who are positive but who have not been tested," said Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of L.A.'s public health department.

How many tests have been run?

A disorganized web of city, county and state facilities, as well as a growing number of private for-profit labs, are conducting tests. Officials have struggled to keep tabs.

The best available tally comes from the state's public health department. As of Tuesday the total was 86,100, after the tally took a sudden downtown due to an overcount at private testing lab.
