According to Heather Tuttle, the hospital director at Back to the Wild, the birds had contracted a highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza or H5N1, which is easily transmittable and can be deadly to birds of prey including eagles, owls and hawks as well as scavenger birds such as crows and gulls. https://www.toledoblade.com/local/animals/2022/04/04/avian-influenza-taking-toll-on-birds-of-prey/stories/20220403065

The bald eagle population in our region has taken a hit in recent weeks. It’s because of H5N1 which is commonly called Avian Influenza, or Bird Flu. A wildlife rehabilitation center in Erie County has handled quite a few cases of the highly contagious and often deadly disease. In an average year Back To The Wild takes in about a dozen injured or sick bald eagles. Many of them are able to return to their natural habitat. But in just the last few weeks, the wildlife rehab center has taken in about a dozen eagles, and none of them have survived. https://www.13abc.com/2022/04/04/avian-influenza-impacting-local-bald-eagle-population/

At least 15 dead Canada geese have been found in and around Lower Lake in recent days and the cause of death is believed to be Avian influenza, said Zach Hillman, Cuyahoga County wildlife officer for the state Division of Wildlife. Hillman said he collected two dead birds on March 15 and had them sent to the U.S. Geological Survey National Wildlife Center for testing. He said it has not been confirmed that bird flu is the culprit, but that is the suspicion. He said he doesn’t think there is anything in the water or on land that would have killed the birds. https://www.cleveland.com/news/2022/03/avian-influenza-suspected-in-deaths-of-canada-geese-in-and-aro…
