Omicron COVID Case San Francisco California ex-South Africa
niman replied to niman's topic in California (2019-nCoV)
Joint Statement from the California and San Francisco Departments of Public Health on the First Confirmed Case of the Omicron Variant Date: December 1, 2021 Number: NR21-341 Contact: [email protected] SACRAMENTO – "As expected, and thanks to California's large-scale testing and early detection systems, the State of California and the San Francisco Department of Public Health have confirmed a case of the Omicron variant in California. Our partners at the University of California, San Francisco identified this case through their sequencing capabilities. California is continuing to monitor the variant's presence and progress through the state's robust Whole Genome Sequencing surveillance. We must remain vigilant against this variant, but it is not a cause for panic. To help detect and prevent the spread of this new variant, the State of California is increasing COVID-19 testing at our airports for arrivals from countries identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). We recognize that everyone is exhausted, and the news of a new variant can be overwhelming. It is important that we collectively focus on the things we know prevent the spread of COVID-19, and its variants. Individuals should (1) get vaccinated and boosted; (2) wear your mask in indoor settings; (3) get tested if you have symptoms; and (4) stay home if you are sick. As we continue to learn more about the Omicron variant and how it can impact all of us, we will share that information through covid19.ca.gov and cdph.ca.gov." https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/OPA/Pages/NR21-341.aspx -
Confirmed Omicron COVID Case Hennepin Co Minnesota ex-New York City
niman replied to niman's topic in Minnesota (2019-nCoV)
News Release: Lab testing confirms state’s first COVID-19 case involving Omicron variant Minnesota Department of Health sent this bulletin at 12/02/2021 09:31 AM CST Lab testing confirms state’s first COVID-19 case involving Omicron variant Infected Minnesota resident recently returned from domestic travel; variant was found through MDH variant surveillance program, which is one of the strongest surveillance programs in the nation The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) today announced that its Public Health Laboratory has found the variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus known as Omicron in a specimen from a Minnesota resident with recent travel history to New York City. The variant was found through the MDH variant surveillance program, which is one of strongest surveillance programs in the nation. Having a robust virus surveillance system in place allowed MDH to quickly identify Omicron once it entered the state and made it more likely that Minnesota would be among the first states to find the variant. “Since the beginning of this pandemic, Minnesota’s nation-leading genome sequencing infrastructure and strong testing network have allowed the state to quickly track the COVID-19 virus and better understand its spread. Today, those tools detected a case of the Omicron variant in Minnesota,” said Governor Tim Walz. “This news is concerning, but it is not a surprise. We know that this virus is highly infectious and moves quickly throughout the world. Minnesotans know what to do to keep each other safe now — get the vaccine, get tested, wear a mask indoors, and get a booster. Together, we can fight this virus and help keep Minnesotans safe.” While Omicron is classified by the World Health Organization as a Variant of Concern, scientists are still working to determine how it may compare with the predominant Delta variant in terms of transmissibility and disease severity. Scientists also are studying the degree to which existing vaccines and therapies protect against Omicron. According to Minnesota Commissioner of Health Jan Malcolm, this new finding underscores the importance of continued efforts by all Minnesotans to limit the spread of COVID-19 in any form. “We still have more to learn about Omicron, but the most important thing we can do right now is to use the tools we have available to make it as hard as possible for this virus to spread,” Commissioner Malcolm said. “In addition to vaccination and boosters, we can slow the spread of this variant and all COVID-19 variants by using the tried-and-true prevention methods of wearing masks, staying home when sick, and getting tested when appropriate.” The person with the Omicron variant is an adult male, is a resident of Hennepin County, and had been vaccinated. The person developed mild symptoms on Nov. 22 and sought COVID-19 testing on Nov. 24. The person’s symptoms have resolved. The person spoke with MDH case investigators and reported traveling to New York City and attended the Anime NYC 2021 convention at the Javits Center from Nov. 19-21. The person was advised to isolate from others. Minnesota epidemiologists will continue to investigate in collaboration with New York City and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Meanwhile, health officials urge Minnesotans to take the following steps to protect against COVID-19, including variants like Omicron: Get vaccinated and if eligible get a booster. To find a vaccine near you, visit Find my vaccine. Wear well-fitting masks in indoor public settings and crowded outdoor settings. Get tested if you have symptoms, have been exposed to someone with COVID-19, have traveled as per guidelines or have been in a setting where you may have been exposed. Stay home if you are sick. Wash hands frequently. Stay away from crowds. Improve ventilation in your home and workplace. Take extra care to avoid exposure to the virus if you have medical conditions or live with someone with medical conditions. Visit the MDH website for more information on COVID-19. -MDH- Media inquiries: Doug Schultz MDH Communications 651-201-4993 [email protected] -

Two Confirmed Omicron COVID Cases Oslo Norway ex-Southern Africa
niman replied to niman's topic in Norway (COVID)
Two cases of omicron variant among travellers to Gardermoen Published 01.12.2021 On Tuesday 30th November, the reference laboratory at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH) received virus samples from two travellers to Norway from South Africa. Preliminary analyses indicate that both are infected with the omicron variant. Les på norsk Share/tip Print Both arrived by plane at Oslo Airport and have been staying in quarantine hotels at Gardermoen since their arrival. They travelled from South Africa to Norway on two different planes between 26th and 28th November. Follow-up Both are in isolation in quarantine hotels and are being followed up by the municipal medical officer. They have only had mild symptoms and have not needed to be admitted to hospital. Their close contacts are being followed up in accordance with current routines in the event of a confirmed or suspected omicron infection. Contact tracing on the relevant flights has been initiated by the contact tracing team at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. “We are waiting for confirmatory sequencing results today, but based on the screening result at the NIPH, the samples are probable cases with omicron. We are in close dialogue with the municipal medical officer in Ullensaker,” says Line Vold, Department Director at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. A third sample that the NIPH was notified about yesterday has not yet arrived at the institute. -

Two Omicron COVID Sequences In Bengaluru Kamataka India
niman replied to niman's topic in India (2019-nCoV)
Two men in the southern Indian state of Karnataka have tested positive for the Omicron coronavirus variant after returning from overseas. The men, who are 66 years and 46 years old, are currently under observation, a government spokesperson said. These are the first cases of the new Omicron variant to be reported in India. The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that Omicron poses a "high infection risk". Officials said all primary contacts and secondary contacts of the two men have been traced and are being tested as well. Six samples from people who tested positive for Covid-19 in the national capital Delhi, and another six samples from the western state of Maharashtra, have all been sent for genome sequencing to determine the variant. Officials are still awaiting results. Several other cities and states are following suit. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-59472675 -
