Even one case of COVID-19 in these facilities among residents or employees is considered an outbreak. We investigate residents, staff and close contacts of infected individuals for possible exposure. (Long-term care facilities include nursing homes, intermediate care facilities for individuals with intellectual disabilities, personal care homes, assisted living facilities, long-term acute care facilities, and psychiatric or chemical dependency residential treatment centers.) Governor Cooper and Secretary Cohen announced a combination of key metrics that North Carolina is watching to inform decisions to ease restrictions. These key metrics are included below. Laboratory-Confirmed Cases reflect cases that were tested and returned positive, including the NC State Laboratory of Public Health, reporting hospitals and commercial labs. All data are preliminary. Not all cases of COVID-19 are tested, so this does not represent the total number of people in North Carolina who have or had COVID-19. Deaths reflect deaths in persons with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 reported by local health departments to the NC Department of Health and Human Services. Completed tests reflect testing completed by the NC State Laboratory of Public Health, reporting hospitals and commercial labs. Currently hospitalized reflect the number of patients with COVID-19 that are currently hospitalized in reporting hospitals. For COVID-19 U.S. case information go to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website.

As public health investigations of individual cases continue, there will be corrections to the status and details of referred cases that result in changes to this report.City of Detroit and Wayne County are reported separately Note on the deaths: Deaths must be reported by health care providers, medical examiners/coroners, and recorded by local health departments in order to be counted. Note on jurisdictional classification: In order to provide more accurate data, the “Other” jurisdiction category will no longer be used. Michigan Department of Corrections cases will be listed under “MDOC”. Federal Correctional Institution cases will be listed under “FCI”. Note on Case Fatality Rate: The case fatality rate is the number of people who have died from causes associated with COVID-19 out of the total number of people with confirmed COVID-19 infections. It is used as one measure of illness severity. Several factors can affect this number. Until recently, COVID-19 lab testing has prioritized for hospitalized individuals due to limited testing availability. As a result, COVID-19 infections were identified more often in people who were more severely ill. This would lead to a higher case fatality rate. As more people with mild illness are tested, it is likely the case fatality rate will go down. Links DAILY COUNTS LAB TESTING DATA ABOUT PLACES LONG TERM CARE FACILITIES CORONAVIRUS SYMPTOMS Cumulative Total of Recovered COVID-19 Cases (as of 5/8/2020): 22,686 Note on recovery: During this response, MDHHS is reviewing vital records statistics to identify any laboratory confirmed COVID-19 cases who are 30 days out from their onset of illness to represent recovery status. As the pandemic continues to impact Michigan, this pool will expand to include more cases. Recovered is defined as the number of persons with a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis who are alive 30 days post-onset (or referral date if onset is not available). The number of persons recovered on May 8, 2020 represents COVID-19 confirmed individuals with an onset date on or prior to April 8, 2020. If an individual dies from a COVID-related cause >30 days from onset/referral, they are removed from the number of persons recovered. These numbers will be updated every Saturday. The counties are divided into 6 relatively equally-sized groups based on their incidence rate (i.e. sestiles). Cases are determined using a national COVID-19 case definition. Case counts by date of report can vary significantly from day to day for a variety of reasons. In addition to changes due to actual changes in disease incidence, trends are strongly influenced by testing patterns (who gets tested and why), testing availability, lab analysis backlogs, lab reporting delays, new labs joining our electronic laboratory reporting system, mass screenings, etc. Trends need to be sustained for at least 2-3 weeks before any conclusions can be made regarding the progress of the pandemic. 25. By LOS ANGELES TIMES STAFF UPDATED MAY 9, 11:01 P.M. PACIFIC 66,773 confirmed cases +2,244 on Saturday 2,694 deaths +64 on Saturday The coronavirus pandemic has spread rapidly across California. Experts say the true number of people infected is unknown and likely much higher than official tallies. To better understand the spread of the virus, The Times is conducting an independent, continual survey of dozens of local health agencies across the state. What we know Tallies continue to climb. Over the past week, the state has averaged 1,872 new cases and 71.7 new deaths per day. Cities have been hit hard. The largest concentration is in Los Angeles County, home to half of the deaths so far. Hospitals are holding up. The number of patients has remained steady, a goal of the stay-at-home policies. Nursing homes are a focal point. At least 1,266 residents and workers have died, 47% of the state total. California's totals sit far below New York, where more than 26,600 people have died. Coronavirus can infect people so rapidly that government officials have issued shutdown orders aimed at slowing the growth of new cases and flattening this line. Growth varies from county to county, but most areas are still climbing. The chart below is adjusted to show how quickly new cases are being confirmed in each county. A good sign is when a line flattens, which indicates that transmission is slowing in that area. Officials have withheld the precise number where there are 10 or fewer cases. State officials say the numbers reflect "point in time" counts limited to the current number of staff and patients infected, which can result in the numbers declining over time. Testing A disorganized web of city, county and state facilities, as well as a growing number of private for-profit labs, are conducting tests. Officials have struggled to keep tabs. After a series of what he called “fits and starts” in test tracking, Gov. Newsom promised better organization and a “new day.” His administration now sets the total number of tests conducted in California at 912,570 following a sudden shift in how tests are counted.
