  16. By LOS ANGELES TIMES STAFF UPDATED APRIL 21, 9:53 P.M. PACIFIC 35,843 confirmed cases +1,978 on Tuesday 1,320 deaths +93 on Tuesday The coronavirus pandemic has spread rapidly across California. Experts say the true number of people infected is unknown and likely much higher than official tallies. To better understand the spread of the virus, The Times is conducting an independent, continual survey of dozens of local health agencies across the state. What we know Tallies continue to climb. Over the past week, the state has averaged 1,416 new cases and 76 new deaths per day. Cities have been hit hard. The largest concentration is in Los Angeles County, home to half of the deaths so far. Hospitals are holding up. The number of patients has remained steady, a goal of the stay-at-home policies. Nursing homes are a focal point. The state has listed 276 skilled-nursing and assisted-living facilities with a confirmed case. California's totals sit far below New York, where more than 19,100 people have died. More: Symptoms How it spreads Get our newsletter Jump to a section of the page What's the trend over time? Where are the confirmed cases? Where are the cases in SoCal? Where are the cases in L.A.? How does California compare? How many people are hospitalized? Which nursing homes are affected? How many tests have been run? Who has COVID-19? What is closed or restricted? What is the trend over time? The state’s first case was confirmed near the end of January. The total grew slowly at first, then much faster as tests became more widely available. The number of cases in California is now on pace to double every 16.3 days, a reflection of how quickly the virus is spreading. Coronavirus can infect people so rapidly that government officials have issued shutdown orders aimed at slowing the growth of new cases and flattening this line. Growth varies from county to county, but most areas are still climbing. The chart below is adjusted to show how quickly new cases are being confirmed in each county. A disorganized web of city, county and state facilities, as well as a growing number of private for-profit labs, are conducting tests. Officials have struggled to keep tabs. After a series of what he called “fits and starts” in test tracking, Gov. Newsom promised better organization and a “new day.” His administration now sets the total number of tests conducted in California at 300,100. The numbers in the columns represent the total number of patients hospitalized and in the ICU with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 at all the hospitals reporting on that day. The number of hospitals reporting varies on a day to day basis, so counts are not directly comparable from day to day. There are 92 acute care hospitals in Washington, excluding our two military hospitals. Behavioral health hospitals are excluded from these data. Data are provided to the Department of Health through partnerships with the Northwest Healthcare Response Network, for western Washington, the Regional Emergency and Disaster (REDi) Healthcare Coalition, for eastern Washington, and the Region IV Healthcare Preparedness Alliance, for southwest Washington, and the Washington State Hospital Association. Labs assign those cases to a county. Counties or the Department of Health then determine the appropriate county of jurisdiction. Those don’t always match initially. We’re working to reduce the “unassigned” number to 0. Contact the local health department for county specific information. Note on the deaths: Some deaths may be reported by health care providers, medical examiners/coroners, local health departments, or others before they are included in the statewide count. It takes longer for the state to announce deaths because they are often reported first to the local health department and then to us. Note on the number of infections: Public health experts agree that the true number of people who have been infected with COVID-19 in Washington greatly exceeds the number of COVID-19 infections that have been laboratory-confirmed. It is very difficult to know exactly how many people in Washington have been infected to date since most people with COVID-19 experience mild illness and the ability to get tested is still not widely available. https://www.doh.wa.gov/Emergencies/Coronavirus

Orpheus is the state of Oregon’s electronic disease surveillance system for reportable diseases. Cases are considered hospitalized if they were ever admitted to the hospital for inpatient care during the their COVID-19 illness. Cases who were examined in but not admitted to a hospital may be incorrectly classified as hospitalized until interview and medical record review are complete, leading to fluctuations in the number of hospitalized COVID-19 cases. ✣As reported to Oregon’s Hospital Capacity Web System (HOSCAP). Every hospital in Oregon is asked to submit data twice daily HOSCAP. Hospital staff are asked to enter bed capacity information, by type, as well as the numbers of patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 illness who are currently hospitalized at the time of data entry. These data may conflict with hospitalization status in Orpheus due to case reporting and investigation lags and temporary discrepancies in case classification. Notes: Because community transmission is occurring in Oregon and recommendations on social or physical distancing are in place, as of March 17, 2020, we no longer report daily counts of persons under monitoring. Confirmation by CDC of laboratory results from the Oregon State Public Health Laboratory is no longer required; therefore as of March 15, 2020, we no longer note the number of CDC-confirmed cases. Reporting of travel history is not available for cases reported to OHA by commercial laboratories; therefore as of March 15, 2020, we no longer include information about travel history. As of March 25, 2020, we are including the number of pending test results available from the Oregon State Public Health Laboratory (OSPHL). The OSPHL serves as the first source of testing during an outbreak and as commercial labs come online, OSPHL increases focus on priority testing. Commercial labs have the ability to conduct testing on an industrial scale, but do not report pending results, therefore we only include pending results from OSPHL. As of March 26, 2020, OHA is releasing a COVID-19 Daily Update (formerly called the Situational Status Report) which is produced jointly with Oregon Office of Emergency Management. It details the overall picture of the COVID-19 response across government agencies. Previous updates are posted on OHA's COVID-19 News page. https://govstatus.egov.com/OR-OHA-COVID-19
