On December 14, 2022, a wild bird of the species Pelecanus occidentalis (Brown Pelican), found moribund in the high seas, 34 km off the coast of Panama City and 30 km from Taboga Island, was repoted. On December 15, 2022, the Vesicular Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (LADIVES) detected the presence of HPAI H5 virus by rRT-PCR and the National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL, USDA) confirmed the presence of HPAI H5N1 on December 20, 2022. Measures taken: surveillance and visits to the islands surrounding the case and in coastal areas of the country. The HPAI alert is maintained in the country. No other deaths in wild birds have been reported. https://wahis.woah.org/#/in-review/4789

Tables of COVID-19 Testing Data, Hospital Use, and Case Demographics View Wastewater Testing Data Download Maine CDC Wastewater Testing Reports People infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 may shed it in the water that flows from their homes to public wastewater systems. This happens whether they have symptoms or not. Communities can track virus activity by looking for viral RNA in wastewater. Wastewater, or sewage, includes water that may contain human waste (toilets, showers, sinks). It also includes water from some other sources (rainwater, water for industrial use). To better understand the burden of COVID-19 in a community, Maine CDC and US CDC test wastewater for the virus. This helps to tailor public health actions to protect communities across the state. Find these data on the US CDC COVID Data Tracker. Data will be added to the Data Tracker as they become available. https://www.maine.gov/dhhs/mecdc/infectious-disease/epi/airborne/coronavirus/data.shtml

  21. On December 27, the ICF (Instituto de Conservación y Desarrollo Forestal, Áreas Protegidas y Vida Silvestre) was notified of the presence of sick and dead Pelecanus occidentalis on the beach of the municipality of La Ceiba, in the department of Atlántida. Samples were collected and sent to the national reference laboratory, IHIMV (Instituto Hondureño de Investigaciones Médico Veterinarias). The results were positive for influenza A on December 28, 2022. The samples were sent to the National Veterinary Services Laboratory (NVSL) where, on January 3, 2023, a diagnosis of highly pathogenic influenza A subtype H5N1 was confirmed. Therefore, a focal area, containment area and surveillance area have been established. Pelican carcasses have been buried. Likewise, serological sampling has been conducted in areas of greatest risk of exposure of backyard poultry in both the containment and surveillance zones, a total of 432 samples have been collected and the results have been negative. To date, only wild birds are affected, specifically Pelecanus occidentalis. https://wahis.woah.org/#/in-review/4824?fromPage=event-dashboard-url

  23. This event arose as part of the surveillance and monitoring of animal health events, carried out by the Agency's technicians. The affected farm corresponds to a commercial layer farm, where unusual mortality was detected and intervention zones have been defined in the focal, perifocal and surveillance areas, accompanied by sampling of farms and application of containment measures. Passive surveillance has been strengthened in order to detect new outbreaks. According to the monitoring, there is a body of water close to the farm where wild ducks arrive. H5N1 has been identified. According to the sanitary measures established for the control of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza - HPAI, in the intervention zones (perifocal zone), being part of the active surveillance established, a new outbreak was detected belonging to a laying hen farm, with epidemiological link to adjacent sheds, belonging to two owners, with a close epidemiological link. Control measures (culling and disposal) have been completed within this epidemiological unit. Passive surveillance has been strengthened to detect new outbreaks. The affected farm had an epidemiological relationship with other sheds located 280 meters away in a straight line, these being part of the primary outbreak. Surveillance has been intensified in the focal, perifocal and surveillance zones with constant monitoring; control measures are being maintained in the intervention zones.
