On March 28, 2022, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI), subtype H5N1, in a second flock of poultry in southern Ontario . As a precautionary measure, the CFIA has quarantined the premises and established movement control measures, and recommends increased biosecurity for other farms in this region. AI is spreading in wild bird populations around the world and is of significant national concern as birds migrate into Canada. The CFIA continues to remind anyone with poultry, or other susceptible birds, to practice good biosecurity habits to protect them from infectious animal diseases. https://inspection.canada.ca/sante-des-animaux/animaux-terrestres/maladies/declaration-obligatoire/influenza-aviaire/detection-d-influenza-aviaire-hautement-pathogene-/fra/1640207916497/1640207916934

On March 15, 2022, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza, subtype H5N1, in a non-commercial flock (non-avian detection) in southern New Scotland. This small farm produces neither birds nor eggs for sale. The CFIA reminds flock owners to remain vigilant and apply biosecurity measures at all times. For more information on avian influenza and the steps producers and owners of small flocks and pet birds can take to protect their birds, please visit the Avian Influenza page on the Avian Influenza website. On February 11, 2022, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza subtype H5N1 on a mixed farm operation (avian detection) in western New Scotland, which produces poultry and other products for local sale. This follows multiple confirmed detections of the same strain of avian influenza in Newfoundland and Labrador and more recently in wild birds, a backyard flock and a commercial flock in Nova Scotia. . In order to contain the possible spread of the disease, the CFIA has imposed movement restrictions and recommends that other farms in the area tighten biosecurity measures. At the time of writing, some countries have implemented temporary import restriction measures, which have varying impacts on poultry products and regions in Canada, primarily limited to the export of certain poultry products. from Nova Scotia. This is normal preventative practice when such detections occur. We are continuing talks with our overseas trading partners to allow trade to resume. Affected producers and industry associations as well as federal and provincial departments are cooperating with the ongoing investigation. The common goal is to protect human health, to protect the health of Canadian herds and, in doing so, to maintain market access. https://inspection.canada.ca/sante-des-animaux/animaux-terrestres/maladies/declaration-obligatoire/influenza-aviaire/detection-d-influenza-aviaire-hautement-pathogene-/fra/1640207916497/1640207916934

On February 3, 2022, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza, subtype H5N1, in a flock on a commercial farm (avian detection) west of New -Scotland. The CFIA notified the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) of the discovery of avian influenza. As a precaution, the CFIA has quarantined the premises and established a control zone with movement control measures and increased biosecurity for other farms in the area. This is a clear reminder that avian influenza is spreading worldwide in wild birds migrating to and from Canada, and that anyone with poultry, including susceptible birds, should follow good biosecurity practices to protect them against animal diseases. Resources are available for producers and owners of small flocks and pet birds . Quick Facts The first tests for the disease were carried out on January 30, 2022 by the CFIA, after birds died suddenly over several days at a farm. The CFIA notified the OIE of the outbreak. The CFIA reminds poultry producers to remain vigilant and apply biosecurity measures at all times. For more information on avian influenza and the steps poultry operations can take to protect their flocks, please visit the avian influenza page on the CFIA website. https://inspection.canada.ca/sante-des-animaux/animaux-terrestres/maladies/declaration-obligatoire/influenza-aviaire/detection-d-influenza-aviaire-hautement-pathogene-/fra/1640207916497/1640207916934
