ETH Zürich release two South Africa variants (501.v2) at GISAID, Switzerland/un-ETHZ-410256/2020 collected Dec 14 and Switzerland/un-ETHZ-410279/2020 collected Dec 15.

Switzerland/un-ETHZ-410279/2020 12/15 matched 501.v2 with 3 AAs deleted in Spike protein and 3 AAs deleted in NSP6.

As part of its research work, ETH Zurich also sequenced around 500 samples from people who tested positive. Using this procedure, the two variants can be discovered. The variant from South Africa was found in two samples. The British variant was not detected. One of the two people who tested positive is in the canton of Schwyz. The second person is in France. The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) is in contact with the Schwyzer and the French authorities.
