Two Montgomery County residents have been found “preliminarily positive” for the South African COVID-19 variant, which is believed to be more transmissible.

Dr. Travis Gayles, the county’s health officer, wrote in a statement to Bethesda Beat Monday evening that the cases are “preliminary positives” and the county is awaiting final confirmation.

“We believe they are travel related,” he wrote.

The early indicators suggest that they might be travel related and they’re being cared for in a hospital in another jurisdiction.”
