The recently released detail in PLOS NTD confirm that the 2014 Zika sequences in Haiti were due to local transmission. Although the UF authors note the similarities (identity) with 31 of 51 NS5 sequences from Easter Island (collected between Mach and May,2014), the don't address the 2016 sequence (from a US resident infected in Haiti). The 2016 NS5 sequence is identical to the 2014 Haiti sequences, but most of the 2016 polymorphisms match the 2016 sequences from Natal, Brazil (from the brain of the aborted fetus in Slovenia). The 2016 Haiti sequence ,Haiti/1/2016,is a clear recombinant, which was created by recombination between the 2014 Haiti sequence, Haiti/1225/20…

University of Florida has released two additional Zika sequences from December 2014 Haiti isolates. These two partial sequences match each other and the full 2014 Haiti sequence. All three have A9327G, which is also present in the 2016 Haiti sequence. This polymorphism is found in earlier sequences from the Asian lineage as well as the French Polynesia sequence and multiple sequences from the 2014 Easter Island outbreak.

University of Florida has released 2 more 2014 Zika envelope sequences. The partial sequence from Haiti/1230/2014 matches Haiti/1225/2014 as well as the NP 5 gene, which is identical in all four Haiti sequences. However,Haiti/1227/2014 has a different envelope sequence ,adding to data indicating that Zikain the Americas was seeded by Haiti sequences, which traveled from French Polynesia in 2013 to Easter Island and Haiti in 2014.

University of Florida has released a partial Zika 2014 envelope sequence A/Haiti/1227/2014 which is distinct from other 2014 envelope sequences from Haiti. This sequence shares a polymorphisms with two sequences from Mexico and one from Martinique, suggesting Haiti seeded Zika into multiple countries in the Americas, including Brazil. All four Haiti sequences (three from 2014 and 1 from 2016) have an identical NS5 sequence.which has not been reported in any sequence from Brazil.

The recent Science paper of sequences in the Americas including those in Brazil noted that a timeline based on the 20 sequences in Figure 3 suggested that Zika arrived in the Americas in 2013. The early cases as well as the number of cases in Brazil suggested that this early entry was in Brazil. However, the earliest sequence reported for the Americas (excluding those from Chile owned Easter Islands) was a Dec 12, 2014 collect from Haiti, 3 months prior to the earliest sequence from Brazil (Mar 14, 2015 for the 20 sequences in Fig 3). The sequences in the Americas are closely related to those from the 2013 outbreak in French Polynesia. Although sequences were generated…
