On May 3, birds from a small flock in Posey County tested presumptive-positive for the H5 avian influenza virus at the Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (ADDL). Samples are being forwarded to the national USDA laboratory for confirmatory testing, with results expected in the next few days. The small flock (Posey1) was reported to BOAH after significant death loss. Because this is a small flock not engaged in commerce (selling birds or eggs), the finding does not negatively impact Indiana’s highly pathogenic avian influenza-free status that was achieved on April 19. On December 11, a COMMERCIAL flock in Daviess County tested presumptive-positive for H5 avian influenza virus. Samples will be tested at the national USDA laboratory in Iowa for confirmation. A 10km control area and 10km surveillance zone have been established. The last confirmed-positive highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) case in Indiana was September 1, 2022. On December 12, a commercial turkey flock in Daviess County was determined to be at high risk of HPAI exposure. To reduce the risk of disease spread, Daviess2 was depopulated and has been quarantined. The Daviess2 production site is associated with the Daviess1 flock that tested positive for the disease on December 11.
