  20. By Los Angeles Times Staff Updated Sept. 15, 10:06 p.m. Pacific 768,507 confirmed cases +2,860 on Tuesday 14,614 deaths +147 on Tuesday The COVID-19 pandemic has spread rapidly across California. Experts say the true number of people infected is unknown and likely much higher than official tallies. To better understand the spread of the virus, The Times is conducting an independent, continual survey of dozens of local health agencies across the state. What we know Officials point to positive signs. State and local officials see signs of hope in the recent drops in new cases and hospitalizations. The death toll keeps climbing. The state has averaged 109.9 deaths per day over the last seven days. Fewer tests are coming back positive. The statewide positivity rate has decreased to 3.3%. Most of the state is still on lockdown. The governor’s new system rates 30 counties as too risky to reopen. Together they're home to 70% of the population. Disparities in age and race persist. Roughly 74% of the dead were 65 or older. After adjusting for population, Latinos are now 3.4 times more likely than whites to test positive. For instance, some agencies do not report new totals on holidays and weekends, leading to lower numbers on those days. Over the past week, the state has averaged 3,433 new cases and 109.9 new deaths per day. Where new cases are concentrated State officials study the latest data and then rate counties to determine when and how businesses reopen. After adjusting for population, the virus is now categorized as widespread in 30 counties, keeping those areas largely locked down. Together they are home to 70% of California residents. The government doesn't release enough data to replicate its analysis, but the rate of new cases over the last seven days provides some insight into where the virus is spreading. Lives lost to COVID-19 Learn more about those we've lost by reading Times obituaries of Californians who have died from coronavirus. California in context To date, the United States has recorded 6,550,804 coronavirus cases and 194,471 deaths. In the last week, the country has averaged 36,255 new cases and 756 deaths per day. While California — America’s most populous state — leads the nation in cases, it ranks much lower after adjusting for population. Home to 12% of the country's population, thus far it has accounted for roughly 12% of cases. State and county totals come from a continual Times survey of California's 58 county health agencies as well as the three run by cities. Those figures are ahead of the totals periodically released by the state's Department of Public Health. State officials acknowledge that their tallies lag behind the updates posted by local agencies throughout the day and do not dispute The Times' method. Data on hospitalizations, tests, demographics, nursing homes and reopening plans come from California's Department of Public Health. Data from other states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico are collected by researchers at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Systems Science and Engineering. The Times database is available to the public on Github, a popular website for hosting data and computer code. The files will be updated daily at github.com/datadesk/california-coronavirus-data.
