D614G increases infectivity of the COVID-19 virus - Cell
niman posted a topic in Coronavirus (COVID)
The D614G change is almost always accompanied by three other mutations: a C-to-T mutation in the 5’ UTR (position 241 relative to the Wuhan reference sequence), a silent C-to-T mutation at position 3,037; and a C-to-T mutation at position 14,408 that results in an amino acid change in RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp P323L). The haplotype comprising these 4 genetically linked mutations is now the globally dominant form. https://www.cell.com/cell/pdf/S0092-8674(20)30820-5.pdf?_returnURL=https%3A%2F%2Flinkinghub.elsevier.com%2Fretrieve%2Fpii%2FS0092867420308205%3Fshowall%3Dtrue -

By Los Angeles Times Staff Updated July 2, 9:53 p.m. Pacific 246,814 confirmed cases +7,859 on Thursday 6,264 deaths +96 on Thursday The coronavirus pandemic has spread rapidly across California. Experts say the true number of people infected is unknown and likely much higher than official tallies. To better understand the spread of the virus, The Times is conducting an independent, continual survey of dozens of local health agencies across the state. What we know Tallies have never been higher. Records have been shattered in recent days. Over the past week, the state has averaged 6,529 new cases and 65.6 new deaths per day. SoCal remains a hot spot. Los Angeles County has recorded 38% of new cases in the last two weeks, while home to only a quarter of the state's population. Hospitalizations are creeping up. Patient counts are climbing in 17 counties, threatening a goal of the stay-at-home policies. Testing has increased. Over the last seven days, about 92,000 tests have been conducted per day, exceeding the governor’s goal. The highest toll is among seniors. Roughly 78% of the dead were 65 or older. At least 3,063 were living at a nursing home. The reopening is rolling back. With cases increasing, some areas have have returned to stricter lockdowns and masks are required across the state.. California's totals still sit far below New York, where more than 32,000 people have died. They offer a more stable view of the trend than daily totals. That's why experts wait for lines like these to flatten before they say conditions are improving. The rate varies from county to county, but most areas are still reporting new cases every day. The chart below is adjusted to show how quickly new cases are being confirmed in each county. A good sign is when a line flattens, which indicates that transmission is slowing in that area. Compare the slope of a county's curve to the slope of the guide lines to estimate its doubling rate at any point. How COVID-19 crushed California’s workforce The coronavirus outbreak decimated California's economy. The Times is tracking the fallout as businesses begin to reopen. Reopening the state California is moving into the third stage of Gov. Gavin Newsom's four-phase plan to gradually reopen the state amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Newsom's roadmap for reopening Stage 1 March 19 - May 7 Strictest restrictions in place. Stage 2 Began May 8 Lower-risk businesses can reopen with social distancing guidelines. Advanced Stage 2: Retail and dine-in restaurants are reopened with social distancing guidelines Stage 3 Began June 12 Higher-risk businesses and venues (such as movie theaters and gyms) can reopen with social distancing guidelines. Stage 4 No date set Concerts, conventions and sports with a live crowd can reopen. All of California's 58 counties have moved into Stage 2, including Los Angeles County. No restrictions lifted All restrictions lifted Hover for more information. Find out what's open where you live. Our state in context The coronavirus has hit most of the U.S., with the largest concentrations in and around New York City. California, America's most populous state, has one of the highest totals. It ranks much lower after adjusting for population. The chart below is adjusted to show how quickly new cases are being confirmed in each state. A good sign is when a line flattens, which indicates that transmission is slowing in that area. Case counts are plotted on a logarithmic scale, which makes it easier to see when cases level off. Doubling rate is the estimate of how long it would take the state to double its number of cases, given the trend in the last week. State and county totals come from a continual Times survey of California's 58 county health agencies as well as the three run by cities. Those figures are ahead of the totals periodically released by the state's Department of Public Health. State officials acknowledge that their tallies lag behind the updates posted by local agencies throughout the day and do not dispute The Times' method. The Times switched to using this method on March 18, leading to increases over what it had published previously using state data. The tallies here are mostly limited to residents of California, which is the standard method used to count patients by the state’s health authorities. Those totals do not include people from other states who are quarantined here, such as the passengers and crew of the Grand Princess cruise ship that docked in Oakland. In an effort to aid scientists and researchers in the fight against COVID-19, The Times has released its database of California coronavirus cases to the public. The database is available on Github, a popular website for hosting data and computer code. The files will be updated daily at github.com/datadesk/california-coronavirus-data. Closures and restrictions are drawn from an ongoing Times survey of county governments. National and global case data are collected by the the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and researchers at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Systems Science and Engineering. Herman Cain Hospitalized With COVID After Trump Tulsa Rally
niman replied to niman's topic in Oklahoma (2019-nCoV)
Herman Cain, the Godfather’s Pizza magnate who twice ran for president and was briefly considered as a potential Federal Reserve Board nominee under President Donald Trump, was hospitalized Wednesday and is being treated for the coronavirus. Cain, 74, was told Monday that he had tested positive for the disease, according to a statement posted to his official Twitter account. By Wednesday, he “had developed symptoms serious enough that he required hospitalization,” the statement said. Cain is currently being treated at an Atlanta-area hospital, the statement said, where he is “resting comfortably” and is “awake and alert.” On Wednesday – two days after Cain was said to have tested positive – he tweeted his apparent support for South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem’s decision not to require mask-wearing or social distancing during Trump’s upcoming visit to Mount Rushmore. “Masks will not be mandatory for the event, which will be attended by President Trump,” Cain tweeted. “PEOPLE ARE FED UP!” Cain is not on a ventilator and is doing well, his staff told Newsmax, the conservative news outlet where Cain has worked as a contributor since April. A spokeswoman for Cain could not immediately be reached for comment. Last month, Cain attended Trump’s much-hyped rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the kickoff event for the president’s reelection bid after the coronavirus pandemic forced him off the campaign trail for months. Critics, including local public health officials, had urged Trump to postpone the rally, warning that hosting a large gathering of people could spread the disease. Cain posted a photograph of himself at the June 20 rally sitting in close proximity to other attendees, none of whom appeared to be wearing masks, as many health officials currently advise. Days later, Cain wrote in The Western Journal that “the media worked very hard to scare people out of attending the Trump campaign rally last Saturday night in Tulsa.” Cain wrote that the rally was a success and disputed criticisms about underwhelming turnout at the event. At least half a dozen members of Trump’s campaign staff who helped prepare the rally in Tulsa had tested positive for the coronavirus before the event. The campaign assured at the time that “no COVID-positive staffers or anyone in immediate contact will be at today’s rally or near attendees and elected officials.” Trump campaign communications director Tim Murtaugh told NBC News in a statement that Cain “did not meet with the President” at the Tulsa rally. In the Twitter statement Thursday, Cain’s staff wrote, “There is no way of knowing for sure how or where Mr. Cain contracted the coronavirus, but we do know he is a fighter who has beaten Stage 4 cancer.” “With God’s help, we are confident he will make a quick and complete recovery,” the statement said. Cain had served in leadership roles at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City between 1989 and 1996. He later became a player in Republican politics as an economic advisor to Bob Dole’s 1996 presidential campaign before briefly launching his own bid in 2000. In the 2012 GOP presidential primary season, Cain gained outsized media coverage with his catchy “9-9-9” economic plan to replace much of the federal tax code with a 9% business transactions tax, a 9% personal income tax and a 9% sales tax. Critics called the plan “dubious” and impractical. Cain suspended that campaign in December 2011 following accusations of sexual harassment, which he denied. Cain regained the media’s attention in April 2019, when Trump announced that he was considering nominating Cain to the Federal Reserve Board. Within a month, however, Trump tweeted that his “truly wonderful” friend had “asked me not to nominate him for a seat on the Federal Reserve Board.” Cain said at the time that “people who hate me” are “already digging up the negative stuff that are in stories from eight years ago ... I’m not going to let the accusers run my life or determine my career.” -

The coronavirus has mutated in a way that might help the pathogen spread more easily, White House health advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said Thursday. Research is underway to confirm the possible mutation and its implications, Fauci said, adding that “there’s a little dispute about it.” Viruses naturally mutate and scientists have previously said they have observed minor mutations in the coronavirus that have not impacted its ability to spread or cause disease in any significant way. The possible mutation that Fauci cited was reported on by investigators at Los Alamos National Laboratory in an article published by the journal Cell earlier Thursday. Virologists at Scripps Research in Florida also wrote about the mutation last month, saying it “enhances viral transmission.” It’s unclear when the mutation might have occurred. “The data is showing there’s a single mutation that makes the virus be able to replicate better and maybe have high viral loads,” Fauci said in an interview with The Journal of the American Medical Association’s Dr. Howard Bauchner. “We don’t have a connection to whether an individual does worse with this or not; it just seems that the virus replicates better and may be more transmissible.” He added that researchers are “still at the stage of trying to confirm that.” The World Health Organization and its team of global researchers have been keeping an eye on more than 60,000 different genetic sequences of the coronavirus collected from samples taken all over the world. All viruses evolve, or mutate, throughout their lifespan. RNA viruses like the coronavirus mutate more quickly than some other viruses, top WHO officials told reporters last month, because unlike human DNA, RNA viruses do not have “natural error checking,” meaning that the code of the virus cannot correct itself. Not every mutation will lead to any meaningful change in the behavior of the virus or its impact on humans, the WHO previously said. Nonetheless, the United Nations health agency has formed a comprehensive data base of genetic sequences to investigate any potential mutations. Earlier Thursday, Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, the WHO’s chief scientist, told reporters at a news briefing that “natural mutations” of the virus are to be expected. She explained that there are certain “domains” of the virus that are “more critical,” such as the spike protein, from which the coronavirus gets its name. “If major mutations occurred in those domains, it might actually affect the development of vaccines,” she said. The mutation that the Los Alamos researchers wrote about is affecting a specific amino acid, the authors of the report wrote. The mutated variant is known as D614G.

Colorado COVID Cases Increase To 33,352 Deaths To 1,701

As of July 01, 2020, at 8:30 PM, the total of laboratory-confirmed and probable COVID-19 cases reported among Connecticut residents is 46646, including 44672 laboratory-confirmed and 1974 probable cases. One hundred one patients are currently hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed COVID19. There have been 4326 COVID-19-associated deaths. In Connecticut during the early months of this pandemic, it became clear that it would be necessary to track probable COVID-19 cases and deaths, in addition to laboratory-confirmed (RT-PCR) cases and deaths. This was needed to better measure the burden and impact of this disease in our communities and is now part of the national surveillance case definition for COVID-19. Probable cases of COVID-19 involve persons who have not had confirmatory laboratory testing (RT-PCR) performed for COVID-19, but whose symptoms indicate they are likely to have a COVID-19 infection. In Connecticut, most of the probable COVID-19 cases involve persons whose death certificates list COVID-19 disease or SARS-CoV-2 as a cause of death or a significant condition contributing to death. Prior to June 1, probable and confirmed cases were reported together.
