  1. As of June 19, 2020, at 8:30 PM, the total of laboratory-confirmed and probable COVID-19 cases reported among Connecticut residents is 45715; including 43763 laboratory-confirmed and 1952 probable cases. One hundred fifty patients are currently hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed COVID19. There have been 4251 COVID-19-associated deaths. In Connecticut during the early months of this pandemic, it became increasingly clear that it would be necessary to track probable COVID-19 cases and deaths, in addition to laboratory-confirmed (RT-PCR) cases and deaths. This was needed to better measure the burden and impact of this disease in our communities and is now part of the national surveillance case definition for COVID-19. Probable cases of COVID-19 involve persons who have not had confirmatory laboratory testing (RT-PCR) performed for COVID-19, but whose symptoms indicate they are likely to have a COVID-19 infection. In Connecticut, most of the probable COVID-19 cases involve persons whose death certificates list COVID-19 disease or SARS-CoV-2 as a cause of death or a significant condition contributing to death. Prior to June 1, probable and confirmed cases were reported together. 22. By Los Angeles Times Staff Updated June 19, 10:02 p.m. Pacific 170,897 confirmed cases +3,665 on Friday 5,425 deaths +70 on Friday The coronavirus pandemic has spread rapidly across California. Experts say the true number of people infected is unknown and likely much higher than official tallies. To better understand the spread of the virus, The Times is conducting an independent, continual survey of dozens of local health agencies across the state. What we know Tallies continue to climb. Over the past week, the state has averaged 3,401 new cases and 62.7 new deaths per day. SoCal remains a hot spot. Los Angeles County has recorded 42% of new cases in the last two weeks, while home to only a quarter of the state's population. Hospitals are holding up. The number of patients remains steady, a goal of the stay-at-home policies. Testing is increasing. Numbers are rising. The state is hovering near its goal of 60,000 tests per day. The highest toll is among seniors. Roughly 78% of the dead were 65 or older. At least 2,703 were living at a nursing home. The state is gradually reopening. Most counties continue to ease restrictions. California's totals still sit far below New York, where more than 31,000 people have died. Coronavirus can infect people so rapidly that government officials have issued shutdown orders aimed at slowing the growth of new cases and flattening this line. They offer a more stable view of the trend than daily totals. That's why experts wait for lines like these to flatten before they say conditions are improving. The rate varies from county to county, but most areas are still reporting new cases every day. The chart below is adjusted to show how quickly new cases are being confirmed in each county. A good sign is when a line flattens, which indicates that transmission is slowing in that area. Case counts are plotted on a logarithmic scale, which makes it easier to see when cases level off. Doubling rate is the estimate of how long it would take the county to double its number of cases, given the trend in the last week. State and county totals come from a continual Times survey of California's 58 county health agencies as well as the three run by cities. Those figures are ahead of the totals periodically released by the state's Department of Public Health. State officials acknowledge that their tallies lag behind the updates posted by local agencies throughout the day and do not dispute The Times' method. The Times switched to using this method on March 18, leading to increases over what it had published previously using state data. The tallies here are mostly limited to residents of California, which is the standard method used to count patients by the state’s health authorities. Those totals do not include people from other states who are quarantined here, such as the passengers and crew of the Grand Princess cruise ship that docked in Oakland. In an effort to aid scientists and researchers in the fight against COVID-19, The Times has released its database of California coronavirus cases to the public. The database is available on Github, a popular website for hosting data and computer code. The files will be updated daily at github.com/datadesk/california-coronavirus-data. Closures and restrictions are drawn from an ongoing Times survey of county governments. National and global case data are collected by the the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and researchers at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Systems Science and Engineering. 23. Saturday, June 20, 2020 NIH halts clinical trial of hydroxychloroquine Study shows treatment does no harm, but provides no benefit What A clinical trial to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine for the treatment of adults hospitalized with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been stopped by the National Institutes of Health. A data and safety monitoring board (DSMB) met late Friday and determined that while there was no harm, the study drug was very unlikely to be beneficial to hospitalized patients with COVID-19. After its fourth interim analysis the DSMB, which regularly monitors the trial, recommended to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of NIH, to stop the study. NHLBI halted the trial immediately. The Outcomes Related to COVID-19 treated with hydroxychloroquine among In-patients with symptomatic Disease study, or ORCHID Study, was being conducted by the Prevention and Early Treatment of Acute Lung Injury (PETAL) Clinical Trials Network of NHLBI. The data from this study indicate that this drug provided no additional benefit compared to placebo control for the treatment of COVID-19 in hospitalized patients. The first participants enrolled in the trial in April at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, Tennessee, one of dozens of centers in the PETAL Network. The blinded, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial aimed to enroll more than 500 adults who are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 or in an emergency department with anticipated hospitalization. More than 470 were enrolled at the time of study’s closure. All participants in the study received clinical care as indicated for their condition. Those randomized to the experimental intervention had also received hydroxychloroquine. Participants in the study will now continue to receive standard of care and follow up as indicated for their condition. ORCHID participants had been randomly assigned to receive hydroxychloroquine 400 mg twice daily for two doses (day one), then 200 mg twice daily for the subsequent eight doses (days two to five) or a placebo twice daily for five days. While COVID-19 usually presents as an acute respiratory infection, it can damage multiple organ systems, including heart, lung, and blood. Most adults with COVID-19 experience fever, cough, and fatigue and then recover within one to three weeks. However, some develop severe illness, typically manifesting as pneumonia and respiratory failure, with continued progression to acute respiratory distress syndrome and death. Hydroxychloroquine is used to treat malaria and rheumatoid conditions such as arthritis. In various studies, the drug had demonstrated antiviral activity, an ability to modify the activity of the immune system, and it has an established safety profile at appropriate doses, leading to the hypothesis that it may have also been useful in the treatment of COVID-19. Who James P. Kiley, Ph.D., Director, Division of Lung Diseases, NHLBI, is available for interviews. About the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI): NHLBI is the global leader in conducting and supporting research in heart, lung, and blood diseases and sleep disorders that advances scientific knowledge, improves public health, and saves lives. For more information, visit https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/. About the National Institutes of Health (NIH): NIH, the nation's medical research agency, includes 27 Institutes and Centers and is a component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. NIH is the primary federal agency conducting and supporting basic, clinical, and translational medical research, and is investigating the causes, treatments, and cures for both common and rare diseases.
