As public health investigations of individual cases continue, there will be corrections to the status and details of referred cases that result in changes to this report.City of Detroit and Wayne County are reported separately Note on the deaths: Deaths must be reported by health care providers, medical examiners/coroners, and recorded by local health departments in order to be counted. Note on jurisdictional classification: In order to provide more accurate data, the “Other” jurisdiction category will no longer be used. Michigan Department of Corrections cases will be listed under “MDOC”. Federal Correctional Institution cases will be listed under “FCI”. Note on Case Fatality Rate: The case fatality rate is the number of people who have died from causes associated with COVID-19 out of the total number of people with confirmed COVID-19 infections. It is used as one measure of illness severity. Several factors can affect this number. Until recently, COVID-19 lab testing has prioritized for hospitalized individuals due to limited testing availability. As a result, COVID-19 infections were identified more often in people who were more severely ill. This would lead to a higher case fatality rate. As more people with mild illness are tested, it is likely the case fatality rate will go down. Links DAILY COUNTS LAB TESTING DATA ABOUT PLACES LONG TERM CARE FACILITIES CORONAVIRUS SYMPTOMS Cumulative Total of Recovered COVID-19 Cases (as of 4/24/2020): 8,342 Note on recovery: During this response, MDHHS is reviewing vital records statistics to identify any laboratory confirmed COVID-19 cases who are 30 days out from their onset of illness to represent recovery status. As the pandemic continues to impact Michigan, this pool will expand to include more cases. Recovered is defined as the number of persons with a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis who are alive 30 days post-onset (or referral date if onset is not available). The number of persons recovered on April 24, 2020 represents COVID-19 confirmed individuals with an onset date on or prior to March 25, 2020. If an individual dies from a COVID-related cause >30 days from onset/referral, they are removed from the number of persons recovered. These numbers will be updated every Saturday. 7. By LOS ANGELES TIMES STAFF UPDATED MAY 1, 2:40 P.M. PACIFIC 51,775 confirmed cases +1,359 today +1,588 yesterday 2,111 deaths +67 today +90 yesterday The coronavirus pandemic has spread rapidly across California. Experts say the true number of people infected is unknown and likely much higher than official tallies. To better understand the spread of the virus, The Times is conducting an independent, continual survey of dozens of local health agencies across the state. So far today, 23 of the 61 agencies we’re monitoring have reported new numbers. What we know Tallies continue to climb. Over the past week, the state has averaged 1,542 new cases and 73.3 new deaths per day. Cities have been hit hard. The largest concentration is in Los Angeles County, home to half of the deaths so far. Hospitals are holding up. The number of patients has remained steady, a goal of the stay-at-home policies. Nursing homes are a focal point. The state is currently listing 285 skilled-nursing and assisted-living facilities with a confirmed case. California's totals sit far below New York, where more than 23,500 people have died. More: Symptoms How it spreads Get our newsletter Jump to a section of the page What's the trend over time? Which counties have the most cases? Where are the confirmed cases? How does California compare? How many people are hospitalized? Which nursing homes are affected? How many tests have been run? Who has COVID-19? What is closed or restricted? What is the trend over time? The state’s first case was confirmed near the end of January. The total grew slowly at first, then much faster as tests became more widely available. The number of cases in California is now on pace to double every 20.5 days, a reflection of how quickly the virus is spreading. Coronavirus can infect people so rapidly that government officials have issued shutdown orders aimed at slowing the growth of new cases and flattening this line. Growth varies from county to county, but most areas are still climbing. The chart below is adjusted to show how quickly new cases are being confirmed in each county. A good sign is when a line flattens, which indicates that transmission is slowing in that area. The counties are divided into 6 relatively equally-sized groups based on their incidence rate (i.e. sestiles). Cases are determined using a national COVID-19 case definition. There currently is no way to estimate the true number of infected persons. Incidence rates are based on the number of known cases, not the number of true infected persons. Case counts by date of report can vary significantly from day to day for a variety of reasons. In addition to changes due to actual changes in disease incidence, trends are strongly influenced by testing patterns (who gets tested and why), testing availability, lab analysis backlogs, lab reporting delays, new labs joining our electronic laboratory reporting system, mass screenings, etc. Trends need to be sustained for at least 2-3 weeks before any conclusions can be made regarding the progress of the pandemic. 16. Abstract We have developed an analysis pipeline to facilitate real-time mutation tracking in SARS-CoV-2, focusing initially on the Spike (S) protein because it mediates infection of human cells and is the target of most vaccine strategies and antibody-based therapeutics. To date we have identified fourteen mutations in Spike that are accumulating. Mutations are considered in a broader phylogenetic context, geographically, and over time, to provide an early warning system to reveal mutations that may confer selective advantages in transmission or resistance to interventions. Each one is evaluated for evidence of positive selection, and the implications of the mutation are explored through structural modeling. The mutation Spike D614G is of urgent concern; after beginning to spread in Europe in early February, when introduced to new regions it repeatedly and rapidly becomes the dominant form. Also, we present evidence of recombination between locally circulating strains, indicative of multiple strain infections. These finding have important implications for SARS-CoV-2 transmission, pathogenesis and immune interventions.
