The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced new blood bank guidelines Friday nationwide. POSTED:AUG 26 2016 10:54PM PDT UPDATED:AUG 26 2016 10:54PM PDT SAN FRANCISCO (KTVU) - The federal government is taking action to prevent the Zika virus from entering the nation's blood supply. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Friday that blood banks nationwide should begin screening all donated blood units for the Zika virus within three months. "We're recommending testing of donated blood throughout the United States and its territories. We're taking this step to further enhance the safety of the blood supply," said Dr. Peter Marks, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration spokesman. FDA says blood banks in 11 states, including California, must test for Zika by September California is one of eleven states facing an earlier deadline to implement testing by the end of September. Those states are Alabama, Arizona, California, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, New York, South Carolina and Texas. Most of those states are close to Florida or Mexico where the Zika virus has been spread by mosquitoes. Some states on the list have had a large number of Zika cases related to travel or sexual transmission. California has 170 such Zika cases. Doctors say the concern is that blood donors might be carrying the Zika virus without knowing it.   21. Novel Influenza A Viruses: Seven human infections with novel influenza A viruses were reported by two states (Michigan [4] and Ohio [3]) during week 33. All seven persons were infected with influenza A (H3N2) variant (H3N2v) viruses and reported exposure to swine in fair settings during the week preceding illness onset. To date, a total of 18 (Michigan [12] and Ohio [6]) human infections with H3N2v viruses have been identified during 2016, all reported during the month of August. One of the 18 persons were hospitalized as a result of H3N2v illness. No deaths have occurred. All variant virus infections have been associated with swine exposure in fair settings. No human-to-human transmission has been identified. Public health and agriculture officials are investigating the extent of disease among humans and swine, and additional cases may be identified as the investigation continues. Early identification and investigation of human infections with novel influenza A viruses are critical to ensure timely risk assessment and so that appropriate public health measures can be taken.
