  2. The new non-travel related infection is located outside of the one-square mile area in Miami-Dade County where the department has identified active transmission is taking place. The investigation is on-going and the department has begun door-to-door outreach and sampling in the area of the confirmed case. Mosquito abatement and reduction activities are also taking place. The department will share more details as they become available. http://www.floridahealth.gov/newsroom/2016/08/080216-zika-update.html

  3. Today, Governor Rick Scott announced that the Florida Department of Health (DOH) has identified four additional people in Florida with the Zika virus who likely contracted it through a mosquito bite. This brings the total number of people with locally transmitted Zika to 21. DOH still believes active transmissions are only taking place within the identified area that is less than one-square mile in Miami-Dade County. More details will be announced when the investigation concludes. http://www.flgov.com/2016/08/09/gov-scott-four-new-individuals-with-zika-in-miami-congress-must-come-back-to-work/

  4. Florida has announced the fourth local case of Zika transmission which is not linked to the cluster (13 confirmed) cases in Wynwood. Like the first three, government announcements (by offices of governor and health) maintained that active transmission was limited to Wynwood, creating confusion subsequently propagated by media reports. The government use of the term "active transmission" is defined by close clustering, and failure to identify such clusters linked to four cases leads to the exclusion of these cases, even though each instance involves a case that has not recently traveled outside of Florida, and the four cases represent Floridians who reside in Miami-D…

  9. While this is good news, and proof that our education and mosquito control efforts are working, we will not become complacent and will continue to aggressively fight against the Zika virus. For this reason, I have directed DOH to make Zika testing available to all pregnant women who would like to be tested at county health departments statewide at no cost. We know Zika is most harmful to pregnant women and their babies and we must work to protect them. http://www.flgov.com/2016/08/03/gov-scott-florida-continues-to-dedicate-every-available-resource-to-combat-zika/

The CDC has now issued a notice to women who are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant to avoid unnecessary travel to the impacted area that is just north of downtown Miami (see map below of the one square mile area). As directed by Governor Scott last week, DOH has activated the Joint Information Center (JIC) within the State Emergency Operations Center to ensure the impacted area has coordinated access to information and resources. http://www.flgov.com/2016/08/01/gov-scott-florida-calls-on-cdc-to-activate-emergency-response-team-following-confirmed-mosquito-borne-transmissions/
