  3. Tonight's Florida DoH update included four cases in Wynwood which were antibody confirmed. These were symptomatic cases from July and may have initially tested negative on the urine PCR test because samples were collected late. Since the cases had been symptomatic and were linked to Zika positive cases, serum was tested for Zika antibodies, which then were confirmed by the CDC, after testing for antibody activity against Dengue and Chikungunya. These four cases had been listed as "pending" in the Wynwood investigation table since August 12, raising the possibility that samples that are pending for an extended period are samples that are antibody positive for Zika …

  9. Today, Governor Rick Scott announced that the Florida Department of Health (DOH) is investigating five new non-travel related cases of Zika. One of these cases is in Pinellas County and four cases are in the impacted area in Wynwood. DOH has begun door-to-door outreach and sampling in Pinellas County and mosquito abatement and reduction activities are also taking place. DOH still believes ongoing active transmission is only taking place within the small identified areas in Wynwood and Miami Beach in Miami-Dade County. More details will be announced when the Pinellas County investigation concludes. http://www.flgov.com/2016/08/23/gov-scott-doh-identifies-local-transmi…

  10. Mendoza’s daughter, Micaela, was born with health issues related to the Zika virus. Seven-week-old Micaela has scarring on her retina and calcifications on her brain. Doctors say Zika is to blame. Mendoza was infected when she was three months pregnant. “I cried a lot,” she said. “One always thinks the worst is going to happen because you don’t know what part of the brain was damaged.” Mendoza contracted Zika in Venezuela and gave birth in Miami. Dr. Marcelo Laufer, an infectious disease specialist at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, has evaluated Micaela. “She has cerebral calcifications, which are pieces of calcifying tissue in the brain,…

  15. Recent reports confirmed a Zika cluster in Wynwood and the CDC issued a travel warning for the 1 square mile area north of downtown Miami. The number of confirmed local Zika cases in that area has grown, which is not a surprise because 14 of 30 employees at the index location were symptomatic suggesting virtually all 30 employees had been Zika infected since 80% of Zika infections are asymptomatic. Similarly 6 of 52 nearby asymptomatic residents were PCR confirmed through urine testing. However, a media reported citing a government report noted that employees at the index commercial site began showing symptoms in early June, indicating local residents infected in June …

  18. Today, the Florida Department of Health (DOH) has confirmed that two additional individuals have acquired the Zika virus locally through mosquitoes in Miami-Dade County. 21. Started by niman,

The recent cluster of Zika cases in Wynwood coupled with local transmissions in Broward, Palm Beach, and four Miami-Dade county cases raised concerns that Florida would begin exporting Zika cases, signaling a dire local situation. The initial reports on Wynwood cited Zika PCR detection in 6 urine samples from 52 asymptomatic residents. Subsequent reports indicated some employees at the index location showed symptoms in early June, so PCR testing of August samples would have missed infections in June and early July. Reports also noted that 14 of 30 employees at the index location had shown symptoms, also signaling a major Zika outbreak that was missed due to a focus …

  23. 1. WHAT’S NEW? (FRIDAY, 8/12/16) Today, The Wynwood Yard received some aggregate numbers from the Department of Health. Of the more than 65 employees tested last Thursday, the result were 3 positives. Please note that all 3 of these people are part of the same group of more than 65 employees that were tested at the Department of Health last Thursday, August 4th. This does not necessarily mean that there is a “new case of Zika in Miami”, as our number is likely already reflected in the DOH and CDC’s count for Miami. To reiterate, this is not a new report of someone who is sick or a new suspicion of Zika illness. This is a result that has just come to…
