  4. DOH has confirmed through our ongoing investigation that local transmission of Zika is occurring in a new small area in Miami-Dade County. The street boundaries are NW 79th St. to the North, NW 63rd St. to the South, NW 10th Ave. to the West and N. Miami Ave. to the East. This is about one square mile. The department has identified five people, two women and three men, in the new area. Three live in this one square mile area. The other two either work or have visited this area. Four of these cases have already been announced and were under the normal investigation process. The investigation of the final case was completed today. http://www.floridahealth.gov/newsroom/…

  5. Scripps Clinic has recently released 5 Zika sequences from Miami Beach. Three were from the first 3 batches of mosquitoes from Miami Beach and the characterization sheets give collection dates and number of mosquitoes in each batch. The other two sequences were from cases, one local case and the other a travel case from Cuba. The two human sequences and two of the mosquito sequences are closely related, indicating the travel case was infected in Miami Beach and not Cuba (which is also supported by the 21 day gap between onset of symptoms and return from Cuba). The collection date for the sample for this case was June 22. In addition, the sequence from the …

  6. Last week the Andersen Lab at Scripps http://andersen-lab.com/ released a series of sequences from 2 patients and 3 mosquito batches collected in Miami. These data indicated all five sequences fell on the same branch of a phylogenetic tree which was shared by sequences from an English traveler to Guadeloupe and an Italian traveler to the Dominican Republic (see tree posted below). The lab is preparing to release another series, and has posted the sequence data on their website. Included are six full Zika sequences from collections between July 16 and August 17. The July collections (ZF 21 and ZF 22) are likely sequences from Wynwood, based on descriptions of local…

Trevor Bedford has posted a phylogenetic tree with 11 Zika sequences from Florida that appear to be generated by USAMRIID. Most or all of these sequences appear to be distinct from sequences released by Scripps and Broad, but all 11 fall onto the same two branches defined by prior Florida sequences http://virological.org/t/zikv-sequence-from-florida/364/10

The Pinellas Co Zika active investigation has been closed. However, although the precise location of Zika transmission was not identified, media reports noted that the case was a firefighter who worked in Hillsborough County (Tampa Bay), whose travel prior to disease onset was limited to Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties, which include Clearwater and St Petersburgh in Pinellas County as well as Tampa Bay in Hillisborough County. These sites are over 200 miles northwest of the outbreaks in Miami Dade (Wynwood and Miami Beach). The Andersen Lab at Scripps Clinic has been sequencing samples from humans and mosquitoes in Florida. Five of these sequences (3 human and …
