  2. The outbreak of coronavirus in Iran, where the deadly virus has killed 18 people according to Al Arabiya sources, is the fault of US President Donald Trump, said a senior Iranian religious cleric on Friday. Coronavirus, which initially broke out in the Chinese city of Wuhan, claimed its first victims in Iran on Wednesday when two elderly people died in the Shia holy city of Qom. It has since killed more than 15 and up to 18 people, according to Al Arabiya sources' initial reports. Iran puts the death toll at eight. “The enemy wants to instill fear in people’s hearts, make Qom look like an unsafe city and to take revenge for all its defeats,” said Imam Hojjat ol-Eslam Seyyed Mohammad Saeedi as he led Friday prayers in Qom, reported opposition outlet Radio Farda. “Trump will die frustrated in his wish to see Qom defeated,” he added. https://english.alarabiya.net/en/News/middle-east/2020/02/23/Iranian-cleric-blames-coronavirus-Iran-outbreak-on-Donald-Trump.html

  10. 9 South Koreans test positive for coronavirus after returning from Israel Israeli Health Ministry publishes list of places the group visited, including Jerusalem, on February 8-15 trip, warns anyone who was in close contact with them to self-quarantine By TOI STAFF and AGENCIESToday, 12:44 pm 3 2,073shares Medical workers wearing protective gear carry a patient infected with the COVID-19 coronavirus at a hospital in Chuncheon, South Korea, February 22, 2020. (Yonhap/AFP) The Health Ministry on Saturday said nine South Koreans tested positive for the coronavirus after a recent visit to Israel. The Koreans were in Israel from February 8-15 and were confirmed to have the virus upon their return to South Korea, according to a statement from the ministry. The ministry called on anyone who was in close contact with the Koreans to report this and self-quarantine for 14 days from the date of their last interaction. It also posted a list of places the group visited, among them Netanya, Caesaria, Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee, the Dead Sea, Beersheba, Jerusalem and the West Bank city of Hebron. The statement from the ministry came shortly after a BBC reporter in Seoul said seven South Koreans from a tour group to Israel of 77 organized by the Catholic Church tested positive for the virus upon their return home. It was not clear whether they were carrying the virus when they arrived in Israel. Symptoms of the virus can take up to two weeks, and possibly longer, to present. South Korea has reported over 400 cases of the virus to date. “We’re trying to clarify if someone from the local churches was in contact with them [the South Koreans],” Wadih Abu Al-Nasr, the Vatican’s spokesman in Israel, told Channel 13 news. “I’m hoping they weren’t infected in Israel. I wish them a speedy recovery and hope and pray that none of our people here were infected by this problematic virus,” he added. The manager of a Jerusalem hotel where the group stayed during its visit told Channel 12 that staff that cleaned the group’s rooms had been instructed by the Health Ministry to self quarantine. “Other hotel workers must report if they feel ill or develop any symptoms,” he said. He added that employees were calm. The Israel Nature and Parks Authority confirmed the group visited the national parks Tel Beersheva, Masada and Caesaria. “Instructions were given to employees at the sites who were in contact [with the South Koreans],” it said in a statement. The report comes a day after Israel reported its first case of the novel COVID-19 virus, an Israeli woman who returned to the country after being quarantined on a cruise ship off Japan that saw a large number of infections. South Korea on Saturday reported an eight-fold jump in viral infections in four days to 433, most of them linked to a church and a hospital in and around the country’s fourth-largest city, where health workers scrambled to screen more than 9,000 worshipers. 284 people are talking about this There’s concern that the death toll, currently at two, could grow. Virus patients with signs of pneumonia or other serious conditions at the Cheongdo hospital were transferred to other facilities, 17 of them in critical condition, Vice Health Minister Kim Gang-lip told reporters. He said that the outbreak had entered a serious new phase, but still expressed cautious optimism that it can be contained to the region surrounding Daegu, where the first case was reported on Tuesday. In some positive news, China said Saturday the daily count of new virus cases there fell significantly to 397, though another 109 people died of COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus. Most of the new cases and all but three of the deaths were in Hubei province, where the outbreak started. However, in a troubling sign, Hubei’s government reported Saturday that a man showed symptoms of the virus 27 days after being infected, according to Reuters, nearly double the estimated incubation time of 14 days. A passenger has her temperature taken by airport health staff with an infrared thermometer after arriving at Hong Kong International Airport on February 21, 2020. (Vivek Prakash/AFP) The new figures, along with an upward revision of Hubei’s earlier count, brought the total number of cases in mainland China to 76,288 with 2,345 deaths. China has severely restricted travel and imposed strict quarantine measures to stop the virus from spreading. Globally, nearly 78,000 people have been infected in 29 countries, and more than 2,300 have died. Italian authorities say a 78-year-old man died of the disease and the number of people infected has more than quadrupled due to an emerging cluster of cases in the country’s north. Many of the new cases represented the first infections in Italy acquired through secondary contagion and brought the country’s total to 19. A dozen towns in northern Italy were on effective lockdown Saturday as a second death from coronavirus sparked fears throughout the area. In the United States, 35 people have tested positive for the virus, including 18 who returned home from a quarantined cruise ship in Japan and one new case reported Friday in California. Saudi Arabia barred travel to Iran and said anyone coming from there can enter only after a 14-day quarantine. The decision directly impacts thousands of Iranians who travel to Mecca and Medina for Islamic pilgrimages, effectively barring them from the kingdom. Iran has reported five deaths for a total of 28 cases. https://www.timesofisrael.com/7-south-koreans-said-to-test-positive-for-virus-after-returning-from-israel/

  16. (7th LD) S. Korea's virus cases surge to 433 on church services, cluster outbreak at hospital All Headlines 22:03 February 22, 2020 SHARE LIKE SAVE PRINT FONT SIZE (ATTN: UPDATES with prime minister's remarks in first 4 paras; ADDS USFK statement) SEOUL, Feb. 22 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's confirmed cases of the new coronavirus more than doubled in a day to 433 on Saturday, led by two clusters of infections at a religious organization in Daegu and a neighboring hospital. Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun, in a rare public message on Saturday night, reassured people that the virus, which emerged in China, can be contained if the public cooperates with the government's instructions. Chung apologized for recent spikes in infections and urged people to refrain from attending mass gatherings, including religious services, to prevent the virus from more widely spreading. The number of COVID-19 infections here has soared this week, with most infections traced to the hospital in the southeastern county of Cheongdo and a minor Christian sect in the southeastern city of Daegu, which constitute some 80 percent of the total infections here. Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun issues a public message calling for people to cooperate with the government's efforts to contain the spread of the new coronavirus, at the government complex in Seoul, on Feb. 22, 2020. (Yonhap) hide caption previousnext 1 of 4 Daegu, where the 2.5 million inhabitants have been asked to stay indoors, and neighboring Cheongdo were designated as a "special management zone" on Friday. Of the 229 new cases, 95 are related to Daenam Hospital in Cheongdo, where South Korea's first coronavirus fatality occurred, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said. A 63-year-old man, who died of pneumonia at the hospital on Wednesday, posthumously tested positive for the virus. On Friday, another patient died from the coronavirus at a hospital in Busan after being transferred from Daenam Hospital, the second death from the virus in South Korea. The public health agency said 62 new cases are tied to the minor Christian sect known as Shincheonji in Daegu, about 300 kilometers southeast of Seoul, and neighboring North Gyeongsang Province and other areas. So far, a total of 114 virus cases -- nine hospital staff and 102 patients -- have been reported from Daenam Hospital, and so-called cohort isolation, the shutdown of an entire medical institution to prevent the spread of an infectious disease, was in place for the hospital, according to the health authorities. The health authorities said 231 virus patients have been traced to the Shincheonji church's services in Daegu, according to the KCDC. The KCDC said it has placed a total of 9,336 Shincheonji members in self-quarantine. Among them, 544 people suspected of having contracted the virus are being tested for the virus. The country's 31st patient, a probable "super spreader," had attended the church's worship services in Daegu, and the 61-year-old South Korean woman, who tested positive for the virus earlier this week, is believed to have infected others. But the health authorities said earlier that it is uncertain whether the patient is the source of the cluster outbreak. The health authorities vowed to make more containment efforts as the potentially fatal illness spreads fast across the country. The heath ministry said it will allow hospitals to separate respiratory patients from others in an effort to prevent human-to-human transmissions and will also check all pneumonia patients in Daegu hospitals. Despite the surge in the number of infections here, the authorities said they will maintain the virus alert at the third-highest, or "orange," level, but the virus response will be carried out with an urgency appropriate to the "red" level. "Community spread of infections began in some limited areas, and we believe that Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province are in a special situation," Vice Health and Welfare Minister Kim Kang-lip told reporters on Saturday. In a sign that the virus may further spread nationwide, other provinces, including Jeju, Chungcheong and North Jeolla, reported cases. Gyeonggi Province also reported more new cases. Four virus cases were reported in Busan, South Korea's second-largest city with a population of 3.4 million, the first cases in the city since the country reported the first case of COVID-19 on Jan. 20. So far, South Korea has released 18 fully recovered novel coronavirus patients from hospitals, the KCDC said. The number of people being checked for the virus and under quarantine came to 6,037 up from 5,481 on Saturday morning, KCDC said. The country has tested a total of 21,153 suspected cases, with 15,116 testing negative. Most virus-infected patients are stable, but about nine patients with underlying illnesses are in relatively critical conditions, the health authorities said.

  19. Coronavirus, first died in Italy. New infections from Lombardy to Veneto The first death from coronavirus also arrives in Italy. Adriano Trevisan, 78 years old, died at the hospital in Padua, where he was hospitalized together with another person positive for the virus. Former owner of a small construction company, Trevisan had three children, one of whom, Vanessa, had been mayor of Vo 'Euganeo where they come from. The man, already hospitalized for about ten days for previous pathologies, died at the hospital of Schiavonia (Padua). "There was not even time to transfer it," said Governor Zaia. "We have taken all the measures and are available to evaluate further, if necessary," said Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte at the end of the extraordinary meeting at the Civil Protection which was also attended by the Minister of Health Hope. "We reassure the whole population - he added - at the moment we have quarantined all the people who came into contact with the certified positive cases". "We are convinced that the national health service is up to this challenge - added Minister Speranza-. We have done a very careful screening job, to select one by one the close contacts of these people we are checking them one by one with the tampons and we think this is the most effective way to contain the progress of the virus ". There are currently 16 Italians who are positive for the virus in Lombardy and one in Veneto , while the eighteenth, a 78-year-old man, did not make it: he died in the Schiavonia hospital, where he was hospitalized. But it is not over: hundreds of people have had direct contact with them and are waiting to know the results of the tests and more than 50 thousand citizens in the province of Lodi are, in fact, in quarantine at their home. The 'index case' of the Lodigiano will be a 38-year-old from Codogno who presented himself to the hospital on Tuesday 18 with flu symptoms but who, at the end of the visit, was sent home. The next day the man returned and this time he was hospitalized until Thursday evening, when tests gave the response: coronavirus positive. The isolation at the Sacco in Milan started immediately. But it was already late. In the previous days, the 38-year-old in fact led everyday life, meeting dozens of people: he went to work in the administration department of the Unilever in Casalpusterlengo, took part in two races - a half marathon in Santa Margherita Ligure on February 2 and one on the 9th with his team in Sant'Angelo Lodigiano - he played five-a-side football, he was at least three dinners and business meetings. How did you get the virus? At the moment the prevailing hypothesis is that he may have been infected during a dinner with his friend. The latter, an Italian who works for the 'Mae' of Fiorenzuola d'Arda, in the province of Piacenza, returned from China on 21 January. In early February, between 1 and 8, he accused of flu symptoms and in those days he met the 38 year old. However, the man tested negative, which can only mean two things: either he was not the carrier or he had the virus, he recovered and developed antibodies. The results of the blood tests underway at Spallanzani will say so. Fiorenzuola d'Arda, in the province of Piacenza, returned from China on 21 January. However, the man tested negative, which can only mean two things: either he was not the carrier or he had the virus, he recovered and developed antibodies. The results of the blood tests underway at Spallanzani will say so. WHERE ARE WE AT THE CORONAVIRUS? However, what is already certain is that the virus has spread to at least 15 other people since the age of 38: his wife, a teacher who is on maternity leave and only for this reason he has not had contact with students, a friend of his with whom he usually runs , 5 between doctors and health professionals and 3 patients from the Codogno hospital, 3 elderly people between 70 and 80 years of age who are customers of a bar run by the father of their runner friend and a fourteenth person of whom nothing is known, except that he is the general practitioner who visited the 38 year old. The fifteenth positive in Lombardy is a patient hospitalized for several days in the Cremona hospital. "Our son is very serious - confirm the parents of the 38 year old, in a self quarantine at home - he is intubated, it is a painful thing, we are destroyed". The work that is being done now is to rebuild all the contacts these people had. Which are hundreds if not thousands. Just to be clear: only the 38-year-old has had relationships with 120 Unilever colleagues, 70 between doctors and health personnel and 80 people who are part of his closest circle, starting from 40 on his running team. This is why the Region, in agreement with the Government, has been able to do nothing but trigger a series of "restrictive measures" in 10 municipalities, an area where 50 thousand people live. Casalpusterlengo, Codogno, Castiglione d'Adda, Fombio, Maleo, Somaglia, Bertonico, Terranova dei Passerini, Castelgerundo and Sanfiorano are in isolation. "The plan adopted provides strong choices" explains Health Minister Roberto Speranza, listing them: a 'mandatory' home stay and the suspension of any public event, of commercial, working, sporting and school activities. "We must keep the virus inside that area" says Speranza who then confirms the measures already taken: "fiduciary" quarantine obligation for those returning from China, and active surveillance for those who have been in risk areas, with an obligation to report to health authorities upon return to Italy. In addition, two Defense barracks are already ready in Milan and Piacenza with 180 places, to accommodate those who will have to go into quarantine. And it is not excluded, Commissioner Borrelli also reiterated this, that hotels may also be requisite. But there is another front. That of the Veneto. Two elderly people from Vo 'Euganeo aged 78 and 67 tested positive in the first tests and were admitted to the hospital in Padua. The 78-year-old, however, did not make it and died late in the evening. The two, Governor Zaia said, have never been to China and have had no contact with people who have returned from the Asian country. Also in this case it will be necessary to understand how they were infected. Finally, in Piacenza - where the prefecture decided to stop basketball, football and other sporting events scheduled for the weekend - a colleague of the Unilever employee, symptomatic, who had been hospitalized this morning in hospital, was negative. (photo credit: REUTERS/ALY SONG) The spread of coronavirus in Iran has raised concerns across the Middle East as Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and other countries reacted to the possibility that the virus could spread via pilgrims or others. Iran held parliamentary elections on Friday but the deaths of at least two more people from the virus, which originated in China, has raised eyebrows. Reports in Iran appear to point to a growing crisis. While only four or five deaths have been confirmed, the 18 cases detected are thought to be just a few of many that are undetected in many cities. The head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed concern. Iranian officials were quoted in regional media say that the virus has spread to “many Iranian cities,” according to Al-Arabiya in Saudi Arabia. Iranians on social media are upset at the slow pace of official reaction, and the lack of clarity. “The situation is much worse than they say,” one person tweeted, basing his information on his daughter who is a nurse. Research Rheumatoid Arthritis Medications (Yahoo! Search) Recommended by The Iranian outbreak began in the holy city of Qom where pilgrims from all over the world come. Most of these are Shi’ites. A seminary in the city has already closed due to the outbreak. But a female pilgrim returning to Lebanon was confirmed as Lebanon’s first case. A case in Canada is also linked to Iran, according to the BBC. Other cases have been reported in Rasht, Arak, Tehran and other areas of Iran. Southern Iraq is now on edge because so many pilgrims from the Shi’ite community travel to Iran. Iraqi protesters say that coronavirus won’t stop their protesters, which have gone on since October. Iraq’s Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani has urged the authorities to prepare for an outbreak. The Kurdistan region is also on edge, but so far has remained free from the virus. Nevertheless one southern Iraqi province was putting border controls in place. Iraq also put controls on travel to Iran. Iranians may be prohibited from entering Iraq entirely, but the huge flow of goods and people between Iran and Iraq would make to seem that difficult. The National in the UAE reported that Iranians were already being banned. Kuwait is looking to prevent port traffic with Iran. Meanwhile Bahrain and Oman are concerned the virus spread will harm their economy. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is in the region this weekend. He met with Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tarik Al Said on Friday. Next door, Saudi Arabia is concerned about pilgrims travelling to or from Iran. The UAE also says that it has two cases of coronavirus, but they are foreign nationals who were in contact with someone from China, according to local sources. Turkey is also concerned about the Iranian cases and putting checks in place. A conference in Jordan has been cancelled. Egypt, which had one case of the virus already, is wondering if worse is to come. In other countries, such as North Africa, or Syria, time will tell what comes next. Many countries in the region are suffering conflict, such as Yemen, Libya and Syria. In conflict areas the ability to detect the virus or even confront it is reduced. If the virus continues to spread from Iran and other countries, as officials and religious leaders fear it will, the ability of a Middle East that is recovering from conflict to confront it is questionable. Many countries like Iraq already have health care systems that are inadequate in parts of the country. It’s not clear how they can even close their borders when many of these countries have widespread smuggling across borders, or armed militias that control parts of their country or border areas. https://www.jpost.com/Middle-East/Spread-of-coronavirus-in-Iran-worries-Middle-East-618349 Iran International English @IranIntl_En · 17h Replying to @IranIntl_En According to information received, on Thursday, by @IranIntl_En , a 35-year-old woman has died from the #coronavirus in the Imam Reza hospital in Qom in #Iran.
