  5. On November 4 an H5N8 warning was issued by FAO, citing a summer outbreak of H5N8 at Uvs Lake on the Mongolia / Siberian border and initial reports of H5N8 in India and Hungary (and three OI reports were published from these two countries on the same day. OIE were subsequently released for outbreaks in Poland, 2 more outbreaks in India, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Croatia. Sequences from the Tyva outbreak were released at GISAID (6 sequences from 5 species) and all had a poly-basic cleavage site of REKRRKR and were clade 2.3.4.4 (but distinct from the H5N8 sequences in Europe, Japan / South Korea, and North America (H5N1, H5N2, H5N8 in United States and Canad…

  7. Russia Federation labs in Novosibusk, Russia have released (st GISAID) six sets of H5N8 clade 2.3.4.4 sequences (collection dates May 25, 2016) from five species of waterfowl at Uvs Lake at the Mongolia Russia Border. This outbreak was recently followed by an FAO warning this month, after H5N8 was found in India and Hungary (in wild birds and poultry cited in November 4 OIE reports). These reports were followed by an OIE report on H5N8 dead wild birds in Poland, a second OIE report on a mute swan in Hungary and media reports on H5N8 in dead wild birds in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Croatia). The new sequences are distinct from the H5N8 in 2014/2015 whi…

  12. National Veterinary Research Institut Poland has release H5N8 sequences (at GISAID) for all 8 gene segments from wild duck in West Pomeranian Voivodeship, A/wild duck/Poland/82A/2016. Analysis of these sequences shows thta the isolate is a novel reassortant, which has 5 gene segments (H5, N8, MP, PB1, NS) matching the six sequences from five species infected by H5N8 at Uvs Lake in Russia (bordering Mongolia). The other three gene segments (PB2, PA, NP) are most closely related various low path avian influenza sequences. However, the PB2 sequence has a novel change at position 678 (D-->F). A similar change at position 678 (D-->Y) has been found in H7N9 gain o…

National Veterinary Research Institut Poland has release full H5N8 sequences (at GISAID) for all 8 gene segments from wild duck in West Pomeranian Voivodeship, A/wild duck/Poland/82A/2016. These are the first public sequences for the H5N8 circulating in Euope. As was seen for the H5N8 from wild birds in northern and southern Germany, the H5 and N8 sequences match the 6 sequences from 5 species infected in the Uvs Lake outbreak in Russia on the Mongolian border. However, only 3 (PM PB1 NS) of the 6 internal genes match the Uvs Lake H5N8 sequences. The other three internal gene segments (PB2 PA NP) match Asian low path sequences from a variety of sero-types.

The spread of H5N8 to Israel signals an outbreak exceeding the 2005/2006 H5N1 expansion. In the fall of 2005 H5N1 was largely limited to Romania, Ukraine, and Turkey. Spread throughout Europe, the Middle East, Africa and South Asia was not reported until 2006. The current H5N8 outbreak has spread throughout Europe and India and now has spread into Israel. Israel reports a case of avian influenza H5N8 in heavy breeders, in Hefzi-Ba (North part of Israel). The flock is 21 weeks old. 40,000 chickens would now be culled. http://www.poultrymed.com/Poultrymed/Templates/showpage.asp?DBID=1&LNGID=1&TMID=178&FID=1868&PID=0&IID=430…
